On May 9, in Hanoi , the competition was officially opened under the witness of representatives of the Singapore Art Advisory Council, the Vietnamese Jury, the artist who won the UOB Painting of the Year award in Thailand in 2019, the artist who won the UOB Southeast Asian Painting of the Year regional award in 2017 from Malaysia, and more than 150 artists and art activists across the country.

Talking about the reason for choosing Vietnam as the next destination for the 42nd competition, Mr. Victor Ngo, General Director of UOB Bank in Vietnam, said that Vietnam has a rich culture that is strongly reflected through art.

"We see great potential and creativity in the Vietnamese art scene. We believe that Vietnamese artists have unique perspectives and voices that deserve to be heard and appreciated in the region," said Mr. Victor Ngo.

According to Mr. Victor Ngo, this award will encourage Vietnamese artists to continue to push boundaries and explore new forms of artistic expression, and will be a launching pad for young artists to reach international levels.

The UOB Painting of the Year 2023 logo is inspired by the winning artwork of the UOB Painting of the Year 2022, Dystopia, by artist Chomrawi Suksom (Thailand). Dystopia tells the story of the world facing global tensions, environmental destruction, natural disasters, oppression and pandemics. To adapt and move towards a better future, people need to stay optimistic and change.

With the diverse development trend of Vietnamese contemporary art, this can be considered the second period of innovation of Vietnamese fine arts in the new era," said Mr. Doan.

In addition to the above criteria, Mr. Doan believes that the first Southeast Asian fine arts awards held in Vietnam will be an opportunity to discover the talents of Vietnam's contemporary fine arts.

Vietnamese citizens and permanent residents of Vietnam can submit up to 3 entries per person at www.UOBandArt.com. Qualified entries will be notified by phone or email by August 19. Finalists will be notified by August 26.
