Brown spot disease is a new disease that has appeared on dragon fruit trees in Vietnam. When the tree is infected, it will be severely damaged in each stage of development. At first, it may only be white dents on young branches and branch tips, then become round brown spots like crab eyes. Next, the disease develops into spots that connect with each other, causing the branches to become rough, stunted, and dry in pieces. The fruit peel also suffers the same damage, even turning the whole fruit brown. In humid weather conditions, especially during the rainy season, the disease breaks out strongly on a large scale, causing heavy damage to dragon fruit gardens, low productivity, and sometimes complete crop failure because the trees die.

Brown spot disease causes a sharp decrease in the commercial value of dragon fruit, thereby negatively affecting the income, profits and economic life of dragon fruit farmers. More seriously, in the long term, if the disease is not well managed, it can significantly reduce the domestic dragon fruit output of Vietnam and further affect the export situation of dragon fruit because it does not meet the quality requirements of importing countries.

Effective brown spot disease management solution

Recently, in Chau Thanh, Long An , Syngenta Vietnam Co., Ltd. organized a workshop on pest management on dragon fruit trees. At the workshop, farmers were shared knowledge related to brown spot disease on dragon fruit trees such as symptoms, ways of infection and damage as well as disease prevention measures. At the same time, experts popularized the process of comprehensive management of brown spot disease according to each stage of plant development, from seed selection, when the tree grows until harvest.

“For brown spot disease on dragon fruit trees, to effectively and sustainably manage it, we should use management solutions from the planting stage to the harvesting stage. Then we use some chemicals to ensure that the disease is completely eliminated, limit the recurrence, and help bring long-term effectiveness to the tree,” shared Dr. Dang Kim Uyen - Deputy Head of Plant Protection Department, Southern Fruit Institute.

Mr. Le Minh Man - Specialist of Chau Thanh District Agriculture Department said, "Currently, farmers are only treating the disease. Meanwhile, prevention and treatment must begin when the disease first appears, when the disease is still sensitive to drugs."

“For current prevention and control, farmers need to follow the 4 right principles. To manage common pests, farmers need to connect with each other in the production process to create a sense of community, and simultaneously spray pesticides to help control fungal diseases on a large scale,” Mr. Man emphasized.
