6 important solutions

As the head of the professional group, English teacher, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy, Dang Tran Con High School (Thua Thien Hue ) shared 6 solutions to help improve the quality of English in the High School Graduation Exam.

Firstly, carefully study the sample test and the guidance documents. Accordingly, teachers need to clearly understand the structure and requirements of the reformed test. Factors such as the level of differentiation, types of questions, and language skills tested need to be clearly understood.

In professional group meetings, organize for teachers to discuss and analyze exam questions, from which to draw appropriate teaching and assessment strategies.

Second, organize testing and assessment in an innovative way. Regular and periodic tests should be designed to closely follow the structure and question format of the graduation exam. This helps students gradually get used to the new exam format, especially questions that require high reasoning and analytical skills.

English is not only a subject but also a language. Therefore, teachers need to be flexible in testing listening, speaking and writing skills, in order to develop students' comprehensive abilities. Use real-life situational questions and assessment based on abilities instead of just testing language knowledge.

Third, innovate teaching methods. Teachers need to innovate teaching methods in a positive way, encouraging students to research, explore, and participate in group learning activities. This helps students develop self-study skills and solve problems independently.

Fourth, support 12th grade students in their revision. Organize review and exam preparation classes by topic, closely following the necessary skills in the exam. Create exercises and mock exams, then analyze the results to help students identify weaknesses that need to be overcome. Provide additional review materials, sample exams and guide students on effective self-study methods.

Fifth, organize mock tests and seminars. Schools need to organize mock tests periodically so that grade 12 students can get used to new test questions and real time pressure. After each mock test, the organization analyzes the results and provides thorough feedback so that students know their strengths and weaknesses.

At the same time, organize seminars to share review strategies, exam experiences as well as guide students on effective test-taking strategies.

Sixth, increase the application of technology in teaching and testing. Using information technology will help students access new test formats more quickly; easily provide additional review materials and sample tests for students to practice outside of regular school hours. Schools can implement online tests according to the structure and format of actual test questions.

Overcoming difficulties in building test questions according to new requirements

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy said that changes in exam structure and knowledge requirements require teachers to change their approach in designing tests to suit the new structure and requirements.

The fact that teachers have to both teach according to the new curriculum and develop tests that closely follow the graduation exam format from 2025 requires a lot of time and effort, putting pressure on teachers in the teaching and testing process; especially for teachers who do not have much experience with the new curriculum.

The 2018 General Education Program has just begun to be applied, so reference materials, sample test questions or resources for building tests according to the new structure are still limited. Teachers have to research and build tests creatively, while there are still not many standardized documents from the Ministry of Education and Training .

To overcome the above difficulties, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy emphasized that the professional group's activities should first focus on the structure and format of the 2025 high school graduation exam; analyze sample exam questions and how to design questions.

Encourage teachers to research additional materials and learn from colleagues to master teaching and assessment methods according to the new program.

The professional team needs to organize document sharing, build a diverse question bank according to the cognitive levels and in accordance with the requirements of the new exam. This helps reduce the workload for each teacher, while improving the quality of the exam.

Schools and teachers need to discuss with parents about changes in testing and assessment methods regularly; inform parents about their children's learning progress and test results. This will help parents understand and support the school in supporting students.

Regarding this content, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy suggested: Because the 2018 General Education Program uses many different sets of textbooks, the exam questions need to be unified in content and specific instructions so that schools and teachers have a direction for teaching and reviewing for students.

Along with that, continue to organize training and share experiences for teachers in building questions according to the structure of the 2025 high school graduation exam format, especially new subjects such as Information Technology and Technology, which are subjects that will become graduation exams for the first time.
