Teacher: Math test is easy, Hanoi's 10th grade entrance score is expected to increase

Mr. Do Van Bao, Math teacher at Vinschool, assessed that this year's 10th grade math exam in Hanoi closely followed the new program, similar to the sample exam, but without many surprises.

Compared to last year, the structure of the questions has changed by adding the topic of Data Statistics and Probability, grouping related knowledge into large topics. The test has 5 large questions, each question is a group of related knowledge topics, facilitating the flow of students' thinking during the test.

The test has a clear structure in 5 parts, with knowledge topics: Data statistics and Probability; Expressions and related problems; Solving problems by setting up equations, systems of equations and applying Viete's Theorem; Geometry of space and circles; Practical problems related to extreme values.

The test is consistent with the spirit of the new program, with more than 50% of the test material originating from real-life problems, requiring students to apply calculation skills or create equations, solve equations and then draw conclusions about real-life problems. In particular, in the last question, the test starts from a real-life problem and is necessary for transportation businesses, requiring students to think about modeling into a problem, solving the problem and drawing conclusions.

Students may be able to solve the problem or only partially solve it or not even solve it yet, but after reading the problem, students also understand that they can solve urgent problems in life with the knowledge they are learning. This is very consistent with the spirit of the new program, students need to improve their skills in applying mathematical knowledge to solve practical problems.

In general, the math exam for grade 10 in Hanoi this year is moderately difficult, the questions are clear, direct, not complicated or difficult to understand. There are no new questions or questions that challenge students (give specific examples). With this exam, students can easily get 7-8 points, students who can excellently pass question number 5 can get from 9-9.5 points or higher.

Mr. Tran Hoang Anh (a teacher specializing in exam preparation in Hanoi) commented that this year's Math exam was quite good, the data of the questions increased practical application, was close to students, and was in line with the spirit of innovation in generaleducation .

Questions 1, 2, 3 mostly involve applying knowledge and understanding, so it is not difficult for students to get points. For students with average academic ability, it is easy to get 5 points in the first three questions.

The test begins to increase in difficulty in questions 4 and 5. In which, part 1 of question 4 mostly applies a simple volume calculation formula, so candidates can easily get points. The test classifies candidates in part 2 of question 4 and question 5.

In general, the male teacher predicted that the average score for Math this year will be slightly higher than last year, and the standard score for admission to schools may also increase. The reason is that the exam for all three subjects of Literature, Math, and English were assessed as easy, and candidates completed the exam well.

Candidates finish the non-specialized public 10th grade exam.

Math is also the final exam, concluding the 10th grade public entrance exam for candidates who do not take the specialized exam.

Previously, Ms. Hoang Bich Ngoc (Hanoi exam preparation teacher) commented that this year's English exam had the same difficulty level as last year. A new type of question was proposed compared to previous years, which was to find the topic sentence for the paragraph (question 32, code 011), arrange the paragraph into a meaningful text, and fill in sentences/phrases to complete the paragraph (for example, questions 17-18, 37-40, code 011).

In general, the test focuses on assessing the candidates' real foreign language ability instead of testing their memorization and cognition, closely following the spirit of the new general education program. The test has about 30% difficult questions, helping to classify candidates between scores of 7-8 and 9-10. It is expected that the English score distribution will fluctuate little, if any, it will be slightly higher than last year by only 0.25 points.

In Literature, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Mai, a literature teacher at Newton Middle and High School, assessed that this year's Literature exam was quite "easy" and within the students' ability.

In the reading comprehension section, the questions have more suggestions, so students do not have to spend time thinking about how to answer. In particular, question number 5, which is worth 1 point, has a simple, easy-to-do request: "Please share a simple happiness of yours". When answering the question, the student who can explain why he or she cherishes that happiness will get the maximum score.

However, the female teacher said that the test was too easy, making it difficult to classify students . "When the test is not highly differentiated, it will be disadvantageous for good students," Ms. Mai said, predicting that the benchmark score may increase slightly.

In the 2024-2025 school year, the entire city of Hanoi has about 127,000 9th graders. The actual number of candidates taking the 10th grade public exam through two exams in literature and English is about 102,400. The total enrollment target including specialized schools is approximately 81,000.
