As they dug further and expanded their exploration, the archaeological team found black wooden stakes pressed into the ground in a horizontal, interwoven, overlapping pattern, forming a rim around a well that still contained water. Several samples of the black wooden posts surrounding the well have been collected and sent to the Oxfordshire Museum. Using digital archaeological methods, experts hope to determine exactly what type of tree they are made from, and how old they are. Photo: Oxford Archaeology. Inside the well, experts also found flint fragments, animal bones and pottery samples. Photo: Oxford Archaeology. According to the initial conjecture of the Oxford Archaeology Group, this well and the artifacts found in the well suggest that they may be traces of activities of a settlement in the Bronze Age. Councillor Judy Roberts, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Development Strategy, said: “This discovery provides a fantastic insight into the past land use of the area. It is thought that the wooden well may have been used for irrigation for the nearby ancient settlement. Photo: Oxford Archaeology.
