Vietnam and the UK have all the factors of "heavenly time, geographical advantage, and human harmony" to join hands to bring bilateral relations to a new height.
The 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2023 is an important opportunity for Vietnam and the UK to look back on the long journey, appreciate the persistent efforts of generations of leaders and people of the two countries to preserve and nurture the strong relationship today. Assessing the relationship between the two countries, Vietnamese Ambassador to the UK Do Minh Hung emphasized that the Vietnam-UK Strategic Partnership is currently in a very good stage of development, with many outstanding achievements in the fields of bilateral cooperation as well as effective coordination at multilateral forums and international organizations. In 2010, the two countries upgraded their relationship to a Strategic Partnership. In September 2020, the two sides issued a new Joint Statement on Strategic Partnership with seven priority areas of cooperation and affirmed their aim to elevate the relationship to a higher level in the next 10 years.

Economic and trade cooperation is an important pillar of the Vietnam-UK Strategic Partnership. The Vietnam-United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), signed on December 29, 2020, has created momentum to promote strong economic and trade cooperation in recent years, despite the difficult global economic context. According to Mr. Do Minh Hung, the UK is currently Vietnam's third largest trading partner in Europe, while Vietnam is the UK's largest trading partner in Southeast Asia. The prospect of economic connectivity between the two countries is very open. As one of the leading dynamic economies in the region, with a large market of about 100 million people and a favorable business environment, Vietnam has become a long-term, sustainable investment destination for British businesses. British investment projects in Vietnam focus mainly on the fields of finance-banking, information technology, renewable energy, education, healthcare... These are fields in which the UK has strengths and are suitable for Vietnam's development orientation.
The “Land of the Mist” with its long-standing education system always has a special attraction for students from other countries, including Vietnam. More than 12,000 Vietnamese students are currently studying at British schools. The European country promotes educational cooperation with the presence of the British Council in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, many leading British schools promote training links with higher education institutions in Vietnam. Emphasizing that the field of education and skills training will be the focus of new agreements between the two countries, British Ambassador to Vietnam Iain Frew said that the UK wants the young generation of Vietnam to be fully equipped with the necessary skills to contribute to building the economy in the future.
The “sweet fruits” obtained over the past half century allow Vietnam and the UK to believe in a bright future with longer, further and more solid steps forward in bilateral relations. Effectively exploiting the potential for cooperation in areas of the UK’s strengths and in line with Vietnam’s development goals such as digital transformation, innovation, finance and banking, etc. will be a strong driving force for Vietnam to firmly step into the era of national development. A new journey awaits, promising to mark many cooperative achievements and bring practical benefits to both countries.
