Gio Chau commune is a long-standing producer of flowers and ornamental plants, having established a strong brand. The commune has the advantage of being a semi-mountainous area, with 922 hectares of agricultural land. A notable feature is that residents are now focusing their capital and scientific and technical expertise on developing large-scale flower and ornamental plant cultivation models with stable market linkages, replacing the previous small-scale models.

According to Nguyen Huu Thi, Secretary of the Gio Chau Commune Party Committee, the Gio Chau Commune Party Committee and People's Committee have implemented many plans and solutions to encourage and create favorable conditions for the development of flower and ornamental plant cultivation models, achieving high efficiency, generating income, and providing employment for many local laborers. The development of flower cultivation has also led to the development of other related industries such as flower pot making, transportation services, and fertilizer production.

Since around 2006, Tran Ngoc Diep and Tran Ngoc Nhan (Ha Trung village, Gio Chau commune) have invested in developing a model of growing flowers and ornamental plants for Tet (Lunar New Year) with main varieties such as chrysanthemums, roses, gerberas, lilies, etc., achieving considerable success starting in 2007.

This is what motivates Mr. Diep and Mr. Nhan to continue investing in developing diverse flower and ornamental plant models on a larger scale, with higher economic value, while also directly producing flower seedlings to serve both their own models and supply the market inside and outside the province.

In addition, they also provided dedicated advice, guidance, and shared their experience, scientific and technical knowledge, as well as financial support and flower seedlings, to people who wanted to learn and build their own flower and ornamental plant cultivation models. Inspired by the successful pioneering models of Mr. Diep and Mr. Nhan, many farmers in Gio Chau commune and some neighboring areas have learned from and replicated the model of growing chrysanthemums and other flowers, bringing in a stable income.

According to Mr. Tran Ngoc Diep, on average, he grows over 3,000 pots of various types of chrysanthemums, gerberas, lilies, marigolds, peonies, petunias, bougainvillea, kumquat trees, etc., annually; and produces and supplies about 400,000 chrysanthemum seedlings to flower growers in the local area, neighboring communes, and markets in Quang Binh and Thua Thien Hue provinces.

The average annual profit is 300 million VND or more; providing stable employment for 7 local workers and dozens of seasonal workers. Currently, Mr. Diep is continuing to invest in a larger-scale model of flower and ornamental plant cultivation to serve the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Dragon 2024, both in terms of quantity and quality of flowers and plants, ensuring they are ready for the market to serve customers and visitors during the spring season.

In a conversation with us, Mr. Tran Ngoc Nhan said that this year, the weather has been quite favorable for flower growers. However, in the context of the current economic difficulties, there will be some impact on the production and business of Tet flowers. As someone with extensive experience in flower cultivation, Mr. Nhan continues to invest in the 2024 Lunar New Year flower season on a larger scale.

To date, he has planted over 3,000 pots of chrysanthemums, lilies, gerberas, roses, etc., and they are thriving. He also directly produces chrysanthemum seedlings in larger quantities than last year, with approximately 1.50-1.7 million seedlings to meet market demand both within and outside the province. These days, Mr. Nhan is focusing on caring for his flowers and ornamental plants to ensure timely delivery to traders according to contracts and selecting the most beautiful flowers and plants to display and sell at Fidel Park in Dong Ha City.

Besides the large-scale flower and ornamental plant cultivation models of Mr. Diep and Mr. Nhan, there are about 50 households in Gio Chau commune that grow chrysanthemums and some other types of flowers on a small scale, covering an area of about 4 hectares.

Most of these flower-growing households obtain chrysanthemum seedlings from the models of Mr. Diep and Mr. Nhan. Although they grow flowers on a small scale right in their home gardens, the growers still have ample experience and apply scientific and technical advancements to cultivate and care for the flowers, achieving high yields. Therefore, many traders and consumers from within and outside the district still come to buy the flowers directly at the production site, ensuring a stable market for flower growers in Gio Chau commune.

With favorable weather conditions and significant investment of effort, dedication, and capital in developing flowers and ornamental plants according to seasonal plans, the people hope to continue to reap a successful Tet flower season, contributing to affirming the Gio Chau flower brand in the market inside and outside the province.
