Cyber attacks increased 38% last year and are becoming more serious, so international cooperation is needed to combat the threat, said Kent Walker, Google's director of global affairs.
The new campus, called GSEC Malaga, will join Google's existing Cybersecurity Centers in Dublin, Ireland, and Munich, Germany, where engineers are actively working on digital safety solutions.
In addition to providing tools for professionals to deal with cyber threats, GSEC Malaga also has a dedicated training space that hosts personalized training workshops for government officials, businesses of all sizes, NGOs, and even local schools.
According to European Parliament (EP) Vice President Dita Charanzova, an estimated 230,000 pieces of malware are downloaded every day. European elections could also become targets for disinformation and cyberattacks.
Google, which has trained 12 million people in digital skills across Europe, has just announced a $10 million commitment through Google.org, to support cybersecurity skills training and community organizations in Europe.
A decade ago, Google acquired Malaga-based startup VirusTotal, which is now one of the world's largest malware databases. Last year, Google also acquired US cybersecurity company Mandiant for more than $5 billion, one of the tech giant's biggest deals.
