BBC reported that local media quoted the Phong Duong District Department of Culture and Tourism as saying that part of the tiled roof of the 650-year-old Phong Duong tower collapsed at around 6:30 p.m. on May 19 (local time).
At that time, hundreds of tiles fell out and created a giant "dust cloud" that caused tourists below to panic and run away. Fortunately, there were no casualties in the incident.

The tower was built in 1375 during the Ming Dynasty and underwent extensive restoration in 1995.
The tower has a structural design consisting of a raised platform and a building. It is one of the largest and oldest towers in China.
Local authorities are said to have evacuated people from the scene after the collapse and temporarily closed the area.
An investigation into the collapse of the ancient tower's roof is underway, according to local officials. Authorities will review the design and construction of the repair project. Reports added that monitoring units have also been dispatched to the scene, along with experts invited to assist in the investigation and verification process.
The tower will be closed during renovations, reopening date to be announced later.
