Unlike previous years, the 2025 High School Graduation Exam will apply a new question format and the scoring method will also have many changes. This new scoring method is to limit the situation of candidates randomly circling to get high scores.
Change the way of calculating multiple choice test scores
According to the high school graduation exam plan from 2025 announced by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), in addition to the Literature subject being tested in essay form, other subjects (Foreign Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology) are all tested in the form of objective multiple-choice tests.
Regarding the new structure of the exam format, Deputy Director of the Department of Quality Management (Ministry of Education and Training) Nguyen Ngoc Ha said that the new structure retains the same 40 questions in most subjects. However, with the exam questions for objective multiple-choice subjects, in addition to the multiple-choice format that students are familiar with, the exam from 2025 will have a new multiple-choice format.
Specifically, the questions in the multiple-choice test are divided into 3 parts: Part 1 includes multiple-choice questions; Part 2 includes true-false questions; Part 3 includes short-answer multiple-choice questions.
The way of calculating scores for multiple choice tests has also changed compared to previous years.
Accordingly, the multiple choice test consists of 12 questions, each worth 0.25 points; the objective test consists of 4 options with only one correct answer, the true-false test consists of 4 questions, each worth 1 point; the short answer test consists of 6 questions, each worth 0.5 points, essentially a fill-in-the-blank question.
In the multiple choice question format, each question has 4 options (a), (b), (c), (d) and requires candidates to answer all 4 options correctly or incorrectly. If candidates only answer 1 option correctly, they will get 0.1 point; if they answer 2 options correctly, they will get 0.25 points; if they answer 3 options correctly, they will get 0.5 points and if they answer 4 options correctly, they will get 1 point.
In this format, the probability of randomly hitting the maximum score is 1/16, which is 4 times smaller than the current multiple choice test format.
Meanwhile, the short answer multiple choice questions are similar to essay questions, and are evaluated through the final results that candidates must fill in on the answer sheet. Each correct answer is worth 0.25 - 0.5 points.
Both of these formats require candidates to have comprehensive abilities, knowledge, and skills to achieve maximum scores, limiting the use of tricks or random circling of answers.
Is the new scoring method reasonable?
The new way of calculating scores for multiple-choice tests is causing anxiety and pressure for many candidates. Trinh Minh Chau, a 12A5 student at Nguyen Hue High School, is concerned about the scoring method for part 2 of the true-false test format.
“With the new scoring method, if a candidate gets one idea wrong in a question, they will lose 0.5 points. This is very unfair and puts pressure on us when doing the test,” Chau said.
Meanwhile, experts and teachers believe that the new scoring method is reasonable, suitable for capacity assessment and has good classification.
Previously, the Ministry of Education and Training announced reference questions for the high school graduation exam to be used from 2025 for 18 subjects with answers.
The Ministry of Education and Training said that the reference exam ensures compliance with regulations on the structure and format of the High School Graduation Exam from 2025 announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, and closely follows the 2018 GeneralEducation Program and mainly grade 12.
The reference test is assessed by experts and teachers on how to calculate the correct/incorrect answer score using modern testing theory. The more difficult the questions are, the more points they will receive. This helps to classify good, fair, and average candidates.
From 2025, the high school graduation exam will be held over 2 days with 3 sessions, instead of 4 sessions as before. The 2025 exam is expected to take place on June 26-27, 2025.
The biggest change in the 2025 High School Graduation Exam is that candidates will take 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects: Math, Literature and 2 elective subjects from the following subjects: Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology.
With this plan, from 2025, candidates taking the high school graduation exam will have 2 fewer subjects compared to the current high school graduation exam.
