Mr. Sang Wook Ham was appointed to this position in 2022 after a long career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . He has experience working twice at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations, and has also worked at Seoul's embassies in Iraq, the United States and Afghanistan.

The IAEA elects a President at the beginning of each annual session, after consultations among member states before the conference. Last year, Thailand held the position.

This year's conference will address key global security issues, including North Korea's nuclear program, nuclear safety and security in Ukraine and Iran's nuclear issues.

This is the second time South Korea has held the presidency of the organization's General Conference since joining the IAEA as a founding member in 1957.

The first time was in 1989, during the 33rd session.
