The exercise took place off the east, west and south coasts of South Korea, with the participation of 13 warships and three aircraft from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd fleets, according to the source.
The Second Fleet mobilized five warships, including the 3,200-ton destroyer Eulji Mundeok and the 2,800-ton destroyer Cheonan, along with an aircraft for live-fire and anti-submarine warfare training in the Yellow Sea.
The 1st and 3rd Fleets respectively deployed warships and aircraft to participate in live-fire drills and tactical exercises in the East Sea and the South Sea of Korea.
During a briefing in the Yellow Sea, naval operations chief Yang Yong-mo stressed: "We must be aware of the grave security situation" in the face of North Korea's actions.
A day earlier, the South Korean Army also announced that it had conducted simultaneous artillery drills on all eastern and western fronts, simulating a situation where the enemy used hot weapons.
All Army units participated in the maneuver and live-fire drills, including K9A1 and K9 self-propelled artillery; K2 and K1A2 tanks; K21 armored vehicles; and K600 mine clearance vehicles.
The South Korean Army said this exercise aims to strengthen its strength and establish a state of readiness to deal with serious security threats.
The drills took place in the context of the North Korean Workers' Party meeting at the end of 2023, wherePresident Kim Jong-un threatened to "crush the entire territory" of South Korea in an unexpected situation.
In response to that warning, South Korean Unification Minister Kim Yung-ho affirmed that Seoul will build a "denser and higher" deterrence system by strengthening its alliance with the United States.
According to him, Pyongyang will eventually have to give up its nuclear weapons if it encounters a strong “deterrence wall” between Seoul and Washington.
