Africa's leading 80-year-old airline wants to welcome more Vietnamese passengers

Ethiopian Airlines, the national airline of Ethiopia and the largest airline group in Africa, recently held a product introduction seminar in Ho Chi Minh City, demonstrating its ambition to expand its market and welcome more Vietnamese passengers on intercontinental flights.

This activity is part of Ethiopian Airlines' strategy to increase its presence in Vietnam, after the airline officially launched the Addis Ababa - Hanoi route from July 2025, directly connecting Vietnam with Africa and destinations in Europe and America with just one stop.

Ethiopian currently operates four passenger flights per week between Hanoi and Addis Ababa, transiting in Dhaka (Bangladesh), using Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, along with one cargo flight per week connecting the two countries commercially.

Mr. Bui Hai Nam - Sales Director of Deks Air Vietnam (General agent for cargo and services of Ethiopian Airlines in Vietnam) said that the airline is implementing many special support policies for agents and partners in Vietnam in the initial stages of operation.

On July 11, the airline opened its first flight from Addis Ababa to Hanoi.

Talking to Thanh Nien about the potential of the Vietnamese tourist market and the plan to expand flight routes in the near future, Mr. Cao Xuan Phu - CEO of Deks Air Vietnam (Ethiopian Airlines' representative in Vietnam) said: "Ethiopian Airlines opening a flight route to Vietnam is part of the airline's plan to expand its global market, while also aiming to exploit the two-way tourism potential between the two countries.

Mr. Leulseged Desalegn - Representative Director of Ethiopian Airlines in Vietnam shared that Ethiopia possesses a harmonious combination of history, culture and nature. This country has ancient castles from the 16th century in Gondar city and the Aksum kingdom formed from the 4th to 10th century is considered one of the oldest civilizations in the world . For those who love nature, Ethiopia is also a land of beautiful mountains and lakes, as the government is investing heavily in tourism infrastructure to attract more international tourists.

"In December, we have a big cultural festival, similar to National Day in Vietnam, attracting a lot of tourists from Europe and mainland China," the representative shared.

The best time to visit Ethiopia is autumn, however, this country has mild weather all year round thanks to its location at an altitude of more than 2,000 m above sea level, with temperatures ranging from only 20-28°C. "I have Vietnamese colleagues who all love the climate here because it is neither hot nor cold and very pleasant," he added.

At this conference, Deks Air Vietnam also introduced RailClick, a modern international train ticket booking platform, connecting with major train lines such as Trenitalia, Eurostar, TGV, DB, Renfe... helping passengers easily combine planes and trains on cross-continental journeys.
