Journey to discover 12 'mysterious gems' of Azerbaijan

From modern Baku to the village of Khinalug in the clouds, Azerbaijan fascinates visitors with its diverse beauty of nature, culture and history that blends East and West.

1. Baku Capital – Pearl on the Caspian Shore

Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, is a unique blend of modernity and tradition. Here, visitors can stroll through the old town (Icherisheher) with its massive stone gates, admire the mysterious Maiden Tower and the magnificent Shirvanshah Palace, all three of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

While walking around the city, don't miss the architectural works bearing the mark of the oil boom period such as the Gothic cathedral-shaped Palace of Happiness - the residence of oil tycoon Murtuza Mukhtarov, or the baroque-style City Hall, the castle-like Sadykhov House and the unique Western Caspian University building.

Baku State Philharmonic Hall is also a must-see for art lovers. Standing out on the skyline are the Flame Towers, three torch-shaped skyscrapers that light up the city at night and are Baku's most modern symbol.

In particular, the center of Baku is a mysterious maze of narrow alleys, old caravanserai that once served travelers on the Silk Road, ancient mosques, colorful carpet shops and faux-ancient houses built among centuries-old stone architecture.

Along the coastal boulevard, you can stroll through Baku Boulevard National Park or visit the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center - an architectural masterpiece by Zaha Hadid.

Baku also attracts with its vibrant nightlife, bars and restaurants serving modern Azerbaijani and international cuisine. Spring and Autumn are especially ideal times to visit Baku, when the pleasant climate, mild sunshine and fresh air make outdoor activities more enjoyable than ever.

2. Sheki Ancient City – The Silk Road's Mark

Nestled against the majestic Caucasus Mountains, Sheki is one of Azerbaijan's oldest towns, once an important stop on the legendary Silk Road.

The most prominent feature here is Khan Sheki's Summer Palace with its sophisticated architecture, especially the shebeke glass windows assembled entirely by hand without the use of glue or nails.

Strolling around the old town, visitors can come across traditional craft workshops, ancient hammams, and enjoy the specialty shekerbura pastry.

In the summer, Sheki often hosts outdoor concerts and craft fairs, adding to the lively atmosphere.

3. Lahij – The village with the breath of the past

Lahij is a small village located on the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains, one of the oldest inhabited villages in the world. The village is famous for its traditional crafts such as copper carving, carpet weaving... The ancient stone houses and narrow cobblestone streets are reminiscent of ancient times.

Visitors come here not only to shop for unique handmade gifts but also to experience the sincere hospitality of the locals, slowing down in the midst of poetic mountain scenery.

The ancient sewer system in Lahij was built in the Middle Ages and is still functioning, also a testament to the ancient technical development of this land.

An early morning stroll around the village while the mist is still lingering is a great way to fully appreciate the tranquil beauty of Lahij.

4. Quba – Tranquil nature and diverse culture

Quba is a mountainous city in northeastern Azerbaijan, known for its mild climate and picturesque landscapes. It is also known for its mountain Jewish community in the village of Krasnaya Sloboda, one of the few remaining independent Jewish communities in the Caucasus region.

Quba is also an ideal starting point to explore Khinalug village – one of the highest and most isolated villages in Europe, which has retained its own language and customs. Quba also has large apple orchards, which are the source of the country's famous apple specialty.

Visitors can pick apples in the fall and enjoy local dishes such as lamb kebabs and wild mushroom plov. Alternatively, the traditional markets in the centre of Quba are a great place to explore local life and buy unique handwoven carpets.

5. Gobustan – Stone museum between heaven and earth

About 60 km southwest of Baku, Gobustan (or Qobustan) is a world heritage site famous for its thousands of rock paintings carved on cliffs, depicting prehistoric life more than 12,000 years ago.

There are also strange “mud volcanoes”, a rare geological phenomenon. This open-air museum takes visitors back in time, touching the traces of a primitive civilization that once existed on the land of Azerbaijan.

In particular, at the entrance to Gobustan National Reserve , visitors will encounter Gaval Dash, one of four “singing rocks” found in the area, produces a drum-like sound when tapped, offering a unique experience for visitors interested in archaeology and amazing nature.

Some tours combine Gobustan with an exploration of the Caspian coast or a picnic amidst the dramatic semi-desert landscape.

6. Goygol – The green gem in the forest

Located near the city of Ganja, Goygol (Göygöl) is one of the most beautiful natural lakes in Azerbaijan, formed after a major earthquake in the 12th century and located at an altitude of more than 1,500m above sea level.

The name “Goygol” means “blue lake”, which accurately describes the clear, emerald-green color of the lake’s waters. The area surrounding the lake is part of Goygol National Park, famous for its rich ecosystem of oak, fir and pine forests, which are home to many rare bird species.

Visitors can walk along the forest trails, camp or simply sit and enjoy the lake view in a peaceful space.

Each season of the year, Goygol has its own charm: Autumn is brilliant yellow, Winter is covered with white snow, Spring is filled with blooming wild flowers, and Summer is cool - the ideal time for outdoor adventures.

Additionally, visitors can combine a trip to the neighboring village of Goygol – once home to a German community since the 19th century, with European-style wooden houses and a unique ancient church.

7. Ganja – City of Poetry and History

The second largest city after Baku, Ganja attracts with its ancient beauty, large gardens and rich historical monuments. This is the birthplace of the great poet Nizami Ganjavi – a monument of medieval Persian literature.

Visitors can tour the towering mausoleum of the poet Nizami, the Church of Our Lady (an ancient Albanian fortress), or explore the “Bottle House,” built in 1967 by Ibrahim Jafarov, who covered the exterior with tens of thousands of glass bottles of various sizes in memory of his brother, who died in World War II.

Ganja is also home to many civilizations from ancient Roman to Persian times such as the Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Juma Mosque, Javad Khan Mausoleum, Chokak Hamam... In the spring, the flower festival in Ganja attracts many tourists to admire the brilliant flowers throughout the city.

The city also has many classic cafes and relaxing spaces by Goygol Lake – a favorite weekend picnic spot for locals.

8. Naftalan – City of healing oils

Naftalan is a popular health tourism hub in Azerbaijan as the city is home to the world's only medicinal naphthalene oil field and attracts thousands of health seekers.

Since Soviet times, it has been a medical resort, where visitors can soak in thick black oil as a treatment for joint, skin and nerve problems. In addition to the medical spa, Naftalan also has a medical museum and a gallery dedicated to the history of this precious oil.

Modern resorts have been built here, combining treatment with relaxation, eco-tourism and high-quality recreation.

The small forests around the city are also suitable for relaxing walks or day picnics, especially in Spring and Summer.

9. Lankaran – The land imbued with the flavors of the South

Situated on the border with Iran and the shores of the Caspian Sea, Lankaran is a lush land of tea plantations, orange groves and a subtropical climate. The city was once the capital of the ancient Talysh Kingdom and still retains a strong southern cultural influence. Lankaran is famous for its signature spicy plov rice, lamb soup and strong black tea.

Visitors can visit ancient forts, hammams or relax in the surrounding hot springs. Lankaran also has nature reserves such as Hirkan, where visitors can combine a relaxing vacation with exciting ecological exploration.

In spring, the orange blossom fields and the fragrant air make Lankaran a romantic stop.

10. Shahdag National Park – White snow in the Caucasus

With its high mountain terrain and long winters, Shahdag is Azerbaijan's most modern ski resort. Located in the National Park of the same name, it not only offers a wide range of ski runs for all levels but also offers breathtaking views of the Caucasus Mountains.

In addition to winter activities, Shahdag attracts visitors all year round with mountain climbing, trekking and camping. The system of hotels, resorts and winter sports centers here meet international standards, making Shahdag an indispensable destination for those who love sports and nature.

In the summer, this place becomes a cool resort in the hot lowland sun, attracting local and international tourists.

11. Ismayilli – Land of wine and green forests

Located on the southern slopes of the Caucasus , Ismayilli is a peaceful countryside with pine forests, valleys and rolling hills of vineyards. It is a place of long-standing traditional wine production and is developing ecotourism.

Visitors can visit wineries, ride horses through the valley, or explore the ancient Albanian monastery in the village of Ivanovka, home to the Molokan Russian community since the 19th century.

In the summer, the area also hosts food and wine festivals, offering an exciting cultural and culinary experience. Mountainside homestays with traditional home-cooked meals are an ideal choice to immerse yourself in local life.

12. Hirkan National Park – The fairy forest of the Caspian region

Hirkan is one of the last remaining primeval forests on the shores of the Caspian Sea, home to many endemic species of plants and animals, including the rare Persian leopard. The temperate climate and rich vegetation make this place look like a fairyland that is lush all year round.

This is an ideal destination for tourists who love nature, trekking and exploring pristine ecosystems.

It also plays an important role in the study and conservation of the biodiversity of the South Caucasus region. The trails in the park are designed to suit both novice and experienced hikers.
