According to Circular 05/2025 of the Ministry of Education and Training regulating the working regime for general education teachers, the working time in the school year of principals, vice principals, and teachers of general education schools is 42 weeks. Of which, the number of weeks teaching the contents of the general education program is 37 weeks.

Also in this Circular, the Ministry of Education and Training stipulates that principals and vice principals at all levels are entitled to summer vacation like teachers. This summer vacation is flexibly arranged during the school year and during the summer break.

At the same time, to ensure the normal operation of the school and avoid the situation where all management staff are off at the same time, the summer vacation schedule of management staff must be reported to the management agency.

Meanwhile, the annual summer vacation for teachers of preschools, generaleducation institutions, and specialized schools is 8 weeks, including annual leave.

Similarly, the annual summer vacation for secondary school teachers and college lecturers is 6 weeks, including annual leave. Lecturers at higher education institutions are entitled to leave according to the regulations on organization and operation of higher education institutions.

Based on the school year plan, scale, characteristics, and specific conditions of each school, the principal arranges teachers' annual leave appropriately, in accordance with regulations, ensuring the school year time frame.

In sudden, urgent cases to prevent natural disasters, epidemics or urgent cases, summer vacation time for teachers of preschools, general education institutions, specialized schools, secondary schools and colleges is decided by competent authority.

However, during the summer vacation, when summoned by competent authorities, teachers still participate in training and development according to job requirements, participate in high school graduation exams, and enrollment.

Teachers are allowed to teach extra classes during the summer.

According to Article 6 of Circular 29/2024, teachers are still allowed to teach extra classes outside of school during the summer break but must report to the principal or director, or head of the school (collectively referred to as the Principal) about the subject, location, form, and time of extra classes.

Teachers who organize extra-curricular tutoring activities outside of school and collect fees from students must register their business according to the law. They must publicly announce on the electronic information portal or post at the location of the tutoring facility the subjects that are organized for extra-curricular teaching; the duration of extra-curricular teaching for each subject according to each grade level; the location, form, and time of organizing extra-curricular teaching and learning; the list of tutors and the amount of tuition collected before enrolling students in extra-curricular classes.

Teachers who teach extracurricular activities outside of school must ensure good moral qualities and professional competence appropriate to the subjects they teach.
