Coach Kim Sang-sik is "helpless" before the naturalized players of the Malaysian team. |
On the evening of June 10, the Vietnamese team lost 0-4 to Malaysia in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. This was the heaviest defeat in the history of the red team against the "Malaysian Tigers", and at the same time, our chances of winning a ticket to the final round are very small.
The Vietnamese team started the match cautiously with a deep formation and held Malaysia to a 0-0 draw after the first half. However, an early goal in the second half caused coach Kim Sang-sik's team to collapse. Speaking at the post-match press conference, the Korean coach apologized to Vietnamese fans. He also explained the reason why the Vietnamese team could not maintain a good game.
Coach Kim Sang-sik said: “First of all, I would like to apologize to the Vietnamese fans who came here to cheer for the team, as well as all the fans who watched the match on television. In the first half, we deployed the team as planned. However, the injuries of two defensive players made it difficult for us in the second half. I think this is one of the reasons why the Vietnamese team lost.”
Before the match, coach Kim Sang-sik expressed concern about Malaysia’s “brand new” naturalized players. After the match, he admitted that these players performed better than expected. The Korean coach added: “We tried to analyze all the new Malaysian players, but they played better than expected and created a lot of difficulties. We need to learn from this defeat to prepare better for the next matches.”
Losing to Malaysia, Vietnam lost the top spot in Group F to their opponents with 3 points less. Because the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers prioritize head-to-head results when teams are tied on points, Vietnam's task is many times more difficult.
