“ If we are caught looking up, it is considered a violation of the rules. Once caught, students are punished all day long, which can be from 8am to 10pm,” said Wang Yimei, a middle school student in Hebei province.
Chinese students are not allowed to look up while studying so as not to lose concentration.
Some teachers may intentionally make noise during self-study time, such as knocking on the door. If a student looks up, he or she will be judged as distracted and punished.
The rule stems from the phenomenon of “Neijuan,” which refers to a person working hard to the point of exhaustion to compete in life. The term has become increasingly popular in Chinese high schools as the race to get into college becomes increasingly fierce.
Many people have expressed concern about the punishment for students raising their heads. They say it is dangerous because it goes against natural human reflexes.
In 2016, when a high school in Shandong province was demolished, students heard the explosion but did not dare to run away for fear of violating the rule of not raising their heads.
In addition, schools have taken stricteducational measures, such as forcing female students to keep their hair short because they believe long hair makes it difficult for them to concentrate on their studies. Others have assigned teachers to monitor classes through peepholes to see if Chinese students are sleeping, playing with their pens, or shaking their legs during class.
