Hanoi National University drops 400 places in world's most influential rankings

According to THE's 2025 University Influencer Rankings, Vietnam National University, Hanoi is ranked 801-1,000 (down 400 places from last year).

The Times Higher Education (THE) ranking organization has just announced the Impact Ranking for 2025. Among more than 2,500 universities from 130 countries or territories, Vietnam has 16 ranked institutions - the most ever.

Accordingly,FPT University, National Economics University, Nguyen Tat Thanh University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics are all in the 301-400 group, the highest among Vietnamese universities. Of which, only Nguyen Tat Thanh University maintains its 301-400 rank compared to last year, the remaining three universities all increased from 401-600 to 301-400.

Four new schools ranked this year include Can Tho University, University of Commerce, Dong A University and Hue University in the 1,001+ group. Vietnam-Germany University was also in this group last year, but this year it was not ranked.

Two schools dropped in rank compared to last year: Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Hanoi National University, down 200 and 400 places respectively.

Globally, Australia's Western Sydney University remains at the top of THE's impact rankings for the fourth consecutive year. The UK's University of Manchester remains at number two. The next positions belong to Korea's Kyungpook National University, Australia's Griffith University and the University of Tasmania.

This year, eight countries/territories appear in the rankings for the first time: Botswana, Burkina Faso, El Salvador, Estonia, Maldives, Namibia, Papua New Guinea and Senegal. Notably, Asian universities account for more than half of the total positions in the rankings.

THE is currently one of the four largest university ranking organizations in the world, along with QS, ARWU, CWUR and US News. The influential university ranking evaluates more than 2,500 schools from more than 130 countries and territories in implementing the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Some of the goals are: gender equality, climate protection, good health and life, quality education, partnership for development goals, and reducing inequality.
