In January, Fukushimaken Keisatsugakko, a police academy in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, held a makeup course for 60 police cadets, including some male cadets who were about to graduate.

The program quickly gained traction on social media. Recognizing the importance of looking neat and professional, especially when officers are in constant contact with the public, the academy hopes to help cadets make a positive impression and build trust.

“We want to remind the trainees that maintaining a proper appearance is important, as they are not only members of society but also future police officers,” Takeshi Sugiura, vice principal of the academy, said in an interview with Nippon TV .

To ensure the course meets professional standards, the academy has partnered with experts from the renowned cosmetics brand Shiseido. These experts not only provide general guidance but also provide tailored advice to each student.

During the course, the instructor guides students through basic techniques such as skin care, foundation application, and eyebrow shaping. She also teaches essential personal care skills such as eyebrow trimming and hair styling.

Interestingly, many of the male students, who were new to makeup, had difficulty with the cosmetic products. Some smeared foundation all over their faces, while others looked around, looking for help from their classmates.

“I had never worn makeup before,” said Yusei Kuwabara, a male student who transformed himself through the course. “I thought being a police officer meant dealing with the public on a regular basis, so I wanted to look presentable before going to work.”

According to SCMP , Japanese police academies have traditionally focused on legal education and rigorous physical training. The introduction of innovations such as the make-up course represents a modern improvement in the training system, equipping future police officers with the skills needed to interact politely with the community.

The Fukushima academy is not the only one to offer this program. Another police academy in Yamaguchi has implemented a similar course, starting with teaching male cadets how to properly wash their faces.
