This conference was hosted by Vietnam, with the participation of 9 ASEAN member countries, Timor-Leste (invited as an observer) and 3 partner countries: Japan, South Korea, and China.
At the press conference, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Thanh Lam said: Vietnam chose “Media: From Information to Knowledge for a Resilient and Responsive ASEAN” as the theme throughout the entire agenda. This theme highlights the role and mission of the media sector in the new period; making information the driving force for development; not only providing information but also promoting the transformation from information to knowledge, to build a Resilient ASEAN; strengthening internal capacity, resilience and adaptation (Responsive) to affirm the role and position of ASEAN not only being inward-looking but also being ready to respond to changes in the current world situation.
The main contents discussed at AMRI 16 and related conferences include: Building a vision for ASEAN cooperation in the field of information and media; ASEAN cooperation mechanism to respond to and handle fake news and false information online; promoting digital transformation activities in the media industry; identifying opportunities and challenges in applying modern technologies to the activities of the media industry; promoting and improving information provision activities throughout ASEAN and with ASEAN dialogue countries.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Lam also said that currently, traditional press is facing great competition from new media methods. That is a complete change in people's information consumption habits. A common problem in countries that do not control social media platforms will be governed by technology algorithms, management methods as well as operations. This transformation entails many economic challenges.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Lam emphasized that the countries attending the Conference will have the opportunity to share experiences, propose initiatives and reach a consensus on a common action plan to respond to this issue. This is an opportunity to affirm the indispensable role and important mission of mainstream media. Faced with such global issues, ASEAN must work together to find solutions to handle fake news, control and limit the negative impacts of new technologies introduced into the information sector.
During the event week, the main activities will be held, including: The 16th AMRI Ministerial Meeting is a forum for ASEAN Ministers in charge of information to discuss and provide directions and instructions to promote cooperation between ASEAN countries in the fields of: Press; Radio and Television; Internet (Social networks, Websites, Internet-based communication) and Raising awareness about ASEAN. The 7th AMRI+3 Conference is a forum for ASEAN Ministers in charge of information and 3 dialogue countries (China, Korea, Japan) to discuss initiatives, priorities, directions as well as promote cooperation with partner countries in the field of information. The 20th SOMRI Conference and SOMRI+3, SOMRI+ Japan, these are meetings of senior officials in charge of information of ASEAN countries and with dialogue countries to discuss the contents submitted to the AMRI Conference and AMRI+3. The official press conference of the 16th AMRI Conference is to announce the main results of the 16th AMRI Conference and related conferences.
In addition, there are a number of forums and workshops such as: ASEAN Regional Forum on Responding to and Handling Fake News on Cyberspace; ASEAN Workshop on Digital Transformation of Journalism - Creating Digital Knowledge.
