Training eye doctors on flying hospital

Can Tho 52 ophthalmologists were trained by experts from Orbis Flying Hospital to treat common diseases that cause blindness and vision loss such as cataracts, retinal detachment, and strabismus surgery.

On May 24, the information was announced by the hospital representative at Can Tho International Airport, the training activities are expected to take place at three hospitals: Orbis, Can Tho Eye - Dental and Can Tho Children's Hospital.

Orbis is a miniature hospital located on a Boeing MD-10 aircraft, 55.3 m long, 17.8 m high, with a wingspan of 50 m, known as a flying hospital. This is the only airborne hospital in the world , belonging to the non-profit organization Orbis, which regularly travels to countries to carry out charitable medical examination and treatment activities, and is currently the third generation of flying hospitals.

Hospital specialists provide medical training through simulation and practice. There is a training room with machines that stream directly from the operating room to the screen; a waiting room for patients' relatives and a place to store medical simulation equipment; a fully equipped operating room, a laboratory, and a technical room.

This is the 12th year the hospital has conducted the training program in Vietnam, this time focusing on ophthalmology, with the training lasting three weeks. The goal is to train local health workers, in line with the National Blindness Prevention Strategy approved by the Prime Minister in 2016.

In the first week, students are trained on a model, and in the remaining time, they practice clinically, examining and treating common diseases that cause blindness or vision loss in Vietnam, including cataracts, plastic surgery and strabismus in children; glaucoma, plastic surgery and medical retina in adults.

During this time, doctors from three hospitals screened 160 patients for eye diseases and performed surgery on 51 people, including children and adults.

Ms. Pham Kim Ngoc, Orbis's chief representative in Vietnam, said that up to now, the flying hospital has examined and screened nearly 5.3 million people's eyesight, treated and provided eyeglasses to more than one million people, performed more than 140,000 surgeries and provided capacity building training for nearly 33,000 ophthalmology staff.
