On the morning of May 20, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center received two precious dresses that once belonged to the Empress Dowager Tu Cung. These two dresses were donated by Ms. Cong Ton Nu Kim Chi, a descendant of the Nguyen Dynasty currently living in the United States.
The two dresses are made of high-quality silk and have special aesthetic and historical value. The first is a red silk dress, embroidered with butterflies, flowers and bamboo with exquisite techniques.
The second one is made of brocade silk, although the buttons are missing and there are signs of decay, it stands out with phoenix and chrysanthemum motifs, typical symbols of Hue royal art.
According to the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, these two shirts were given by Queen Mother Tu Cung to the adoptive sister of Mrs. Cong Ton Nu Kim Chi in the early 1960s as souvenirs before being taken to France.
In 1995, these two shirts were transferred to Ms. Kim Chi in the US. Recently, Ms. Kim Chi decided to donate these two shirts to the Center with the desire to contribute to the preservation and promotion of the value of Hue royal heritage. Speaking at the reception ceremony, Mr. Pham Xuan Cuong, representative of the donating family, expressed his hope that the royal descendants who still preserve the artifacts will continue to accompany the work of preserving the national heritage.
Mr. Hoang Viet Trung, Director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, affirmed that the two shirts will be carefully preserved and displayed at the Hue Royal Antiquities Museum, serving the research and sightseeing needs of the public: “Through this reception ceremony, we hope to spread the message to protect, preserve and promote the value of antiquities. There are still many antiquities from the Nguyen Dynasty. The current problem is to find a way to repatriate those antiquities, especially those containing cultural and historical values of the country. We hope to receive more antiquities in the future.”
