Summer vacation is the time when the number of accidents and injuries (TNTT) in children increases. These accidents not only cause the risk of death but also leave serious consequences and sequelae. To prevent TNTT and drowning for children, schools in Hung Ha district are implementing many solutions to help children improve their knowledge and skills to protect themselves at school and in daily life.
Hung Ha develops the teaching and learning swimming movement to help reduce drowning accidents for children.
Every year, in Hung Ha district, there are 6-8 drowning incidents in which the victims are students. These incidents show that the work of preventing drowning accidents for students in some educational institutions is still limited. The dissemination and education of knowledge and skills to prevent drowning for students has not been implemented in a large-scale and systematic manner.
In order to reduce the number of children drowning, Minh Tan Primary and Secondary School has chosen the topic of drowning prevention to train 730 students. During the training session, the students enthusiastically participated in answering multiple choice questions and practicing basic skills on drowning prevention.
Nguyen Thi Yen Phuong, class 9C said: Being equipped with skills to handle situations when we or others unfortunately drown; how to give first aid to drowning victims... helps us understand thoroughly, remember for a long time to apply to ourselves.
Ms. Bui Thi Xiem, Head of Minh Tan Primary and Secondary School, shared: Right from the beginning of the school year, the school has considered the prevention of drowning and child accidents as one of the key tasks, so it regularly integrates them into extracurricular activities, instructing children on how to protect themselves to avoid unfortunate accidents. In addition, we coordinate with relevant agencies to organize activities on sex education , prevention of child abuse, ensuring traffic safety and developing a plan to coordinate swimming lessons for students right after their summer vacation.
Students practice traffic safety activities.
At Chi Lang Kindergarten, during extracurricular activities, teachers always carefully guide children to play with toys safely.
Teacher Dinh Thi Oanh, in charge of the 5-year-old class, said: We choose to teach safety skills to children according to each topic, integrating education into different times of the day; organizing specialized activities such as: with the topic of traffic safety, we instruct students on safe traffic skills; with the topic of family, children practice skills of not following strangers, using safety equipment at school and at home, thereby helping children have self-protection skills. In addition, with the characteristics of rural areas with many rivers, ponds, lakes, and ditches, young children often like to play in these areas, so in life skills lessons, we integrate additional skills to prevent drowning for children such as: do not go near areas with danger signs such as river banks, ponds, and lakes; do not play around wells or ditches without an adult accompanying; Combine propaganda to parents to focus on building fences, preventing children from playing in the pond on their own to prevent cases where children slip and fall into the water without timely rescue.
By setting up propaganda corners such as hanging slogans, pictures, and documents on preventing and combating accidents in classrooms; organizing training for cadres, teachers, and employees on the content of preventing and combating accidents and drowning in schools..., Chi Lang Kindergarten also built a school medicine cabinet and some emergency equipment and tools according to regulations to handle accidents when necessary; regularly check and review facilities, resolutely eliminate items and toys that do not ensure quality and are unsafe for children and teachers...
Teacher Nguyen Thi Oanh, Principal of Chi Lang Kindergarten shared: In the 2022-2023 school year, the school has 400 children/12 groups of classes. Right from the beginning of the school year, the school has organized the purchase of additional equipment, supplies, and toys to ensure safety; renovated and repaired facilities, decorated the environment inside and outside the classroom, especially outdoor equipment and toys to ensure children have fun activities; at the same time, promoted propaganda on drowning prevention for children.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Hoat, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Hung Ha district, said: Every year, we direct schools to regularly inspect and review the entire system of school facilities, equipment for teaching and learning, equipment for recreational activities, laboratory equipment, walls, fences, railings, playgrounds, electrical systems, etc., thereby promptly repairing, replacing, and overcoming them, ensuring the criteria for safe schools. At the same time, promote propaganda and dissemination of knowledge on drowning prevention and control during class activities and extracurricular activities; strengthen coordination between schools and families to manage and supervise students after school hours and during summer vacation; review and detect high-risk areas for drowning such as water holes, lakes, rivers, deep and dangerous water areas, water storage facilities, etc. to provide timely warnings; organize swimming teaching programs in schools.
In addition, we direct schools to implement food hygiene and safety; pay attention to investing in kitchen equipment, modern facilities such as gas rice cookers, dish dryers, water filtration systems... to ensure hygiene and safety for children when they go to school, thereby contributing to building a safe and healthy living environment for them to develop comprehensively.
