Whiteleg shrimp is one of the main farming species of the aquaculture industry. However, the current farming method is not very effective and also causes environmental pollution. Through the implementation of the project of raising whiteleg shrimp in 3 stages using Semi-biofloc technology in Khanh Hoa , it shows that applying this farming technology brings high efficiency thanks to good disease management, cost savings, and no environmental pollution.
More efficient
Introduced by Master Huynh Kim Khanh - head of the project on raising white-leg shrimp in 3 stages using Semi-biofloc technology in Khanh Hoa (implemented from December 2021 to May 2024), we visited Chinh My Aquaculture Farm (Ninh Phu commune, Ninh Hoa town) of Mr. Le Minh Phu. On an area of 1ha, Mr. Phu invested in a model of raising white-leg shrimp in 3 stages in a ladder form using Semi-biofloc technology.

Mr. Phu said that in 2023, he started participating in the project and invested 1 billion VND to renovate the pond into 3 terraced ponds. Different from the traditional farming method, he invested in microbial culture areas using a mixture of microbial yeast composted with molasses to create biofloc to periodically transfer to the pond... Following the instructions, in phase 1, he raised 250,000 - 500,000 shrimp in a tank of more than 100m3 for about 30 days. In phase 2, he brought the shrimp to an outdoor pond and applied Semi biofloc technology. After about 30 days, when the shrimp reached a size of 200 - 250 shrimp/kg, with a density of 500 shrimp/ m3 , he moved to phase 3, moved the shrimp to the third pond and reduced the density to 250 - 300 shrimp/ m3 . After about 3 months of raising, the shrimp reach an average size of 50 shrimp/kg, completing a farming cycle. Mr. Phu excitedly said: “Raising shrimp according to this model, I save 1/3 of the cost of feed and labor; the shrimp gain weight very quickly. In particular, I can raise many crops in a overlapping form. When transferring the shrimp to the second pond, I can start raising shrimp for the new crop. In addition, when an epidemic occurs at any stage, I can easily isolate and prevent it at that stage, not letting it spread. In the first shrimp crop this year, I raised 3 batches, each batch yielded more than 5 tons, earning hundreds of millions of VND/crop."
Master Huynh Kim Khanh said that through the implementation of 3-stage white-leg shrimp farming using Semi-biofloc technology at Chinh My Aquaculture Farm and K18 Van Hung Company Limited (Van Ninh district) , the shrimp yield and size are higher, while the cost is much lower than traditional shrimp farming.
Promising direction
According to Master Huynh Kim Khanh, Semi-biofloc technology will turn organic substances in water into biofloc particles. These biofloc particles can become nutrients for shrimp. In other words, this technology will help turn dirt that pollutes the farming environment, such as: algae, feces, excess food, dead microorganisms, bacteria, etc. into food for shrimp. This both cleans the water environment and creates free food for shrimp. The advantage of this farming technology is that farmers do not have to change the water, reduce feed costs, reduce loss rates, and shrimp grow faster.

The project proposes two models: Raising white-leg shrimp in 3 stages in the form of ladders and in normal ponds using Semi-biofloc technology. The farming process must ensure system hygiene, water filtration and treatment, microbiological culture and floc creation. At the same farming time, the ladder pond model can be deployed for more than 3 crops compared to the traditional farming method. However, the new farming technology requires a fairly large investment compared to the traditional farming method. Farmers must design the pond area in the ratio of 1-2-4, in the form of ladders; have a wastewater treatment system, technical equipment to operate in the ponds... Although the investment cost is high, the efficiency is great. According to the results of the model test, the survival rate of shrimp is more than 90%, the farmed shrimp is of high quality and food safety, can be raised many crops in a year, the profit margin reaches 24%/crop. Currently, suitable farming areas are localities in Ninh Hoa town and Van Ninh district.
Master Huynh Kim Khanh added that shrimp farming using Semi-biofloc technology will have a tightly controlled water environment, with a closed and circulating water source through settling and filtering ponds; the farming process is less affected by weather and environmental factors, so the shrimp can be released all year round, not dependent on the seasonal calendar. This is also an advantage to avoid mass harvesting, which reduces the price of commercial shrimp.
