The Indonesian team announced the list of 33 players preparing for the AFF Cup (ASEAN Cup) 2024. As rumored, coach Shin Tae-yong did not call up the strongest squad.
Most of the players on this list are under-21. Only Asnawi Mangkualam and Pratama Arhan are over 21. Of the remaining 31 players (born in 2003 or later), 24 have never played for the Indonesian national team.
Marselino Ferdinan, Rafael Struick, Ivar Jenner, Justin Hubner are the rare players who have had regular playing positions in the Indonesian national team in the past year. Most of the naturalized stars of Dutch-Indonesian origin have not been called up.

It is not surprising that the Indonesian team will not have the strongest squad to participate in the AFF Cup (ASEAN Cup) 2024. The Southeast Asian Championship does not coincide with the international competition schedule of the World Football Federation (FIFA Days). Clubs are not required to give up players to the national team.
Most of Indonesia's main squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers are playing in Europe, where the leagues have not entered the winter break. Meanwhile, Indonesia's national championship has not stopped during the AFF Cup.
Before November 25, coach Shin Tae-yong only revealed 25 players selected for the 2024 AFF Cup campaign. Of these, 15 players were announced before the 2026 World Cup qualifying round, including Marselino Ferdinan (Oxford United), Arhan Pratama (Suwon), Asnawi Mangkualam (Port FC) and Ronaldo Kwateh (Muangthong United). For the rest, Mr. Shin summoned a series of new players, whose names had never been known in the national team of the archipelago country.
However, on November 23, the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) suddenly revealed that the trio of naturalized players Rafael Struick, Ivar Jenner and Justin Hubner will participate in the AFF Cup 2024. Previously, none of them confirmed their return to Southeast Asia to compete in December. On the contrary, Maarten Paes - a goalkeeper who is not tied to a schedule in the US professional league - was absent.
At the AFF Cup 2024, Indonesia is in Group B with the Vietnamese team.
