While Inter and River Plate battled it out throughout the first half, in the other match played at the same time, Monterrey delivered an impressive performance against Urawa Reds. The CONCACAF representatives scored three goals against their Asian opponents in just 38 minutes, including two spectacular long-range strikes from Nelson Deossa and Jesus Corona.
The 3-0 victory propelled Monterrey to the top of Group E with 5 points and a goal difference of +3, while simultaneously forcing Inter and River Plate into a do-or-die battle. Inter must win to have any chance of progressing, while River Plate cannot afford to lose.
At the start of the second half, Inter launched a relentless attack. Opportunities repeatedly arose for Lautaro Martinez in the 51st and 55th minutes, but the Argentinian striker missed both chances, even though only the Monterrey goalkeeper was in front of him.
