In a Power On report on Bloomberg , analyst Mark Gurman said Apple is upgrading some satellite-focused features on future generations of iPhones.
Satellite connection setup is slated for a major improvement. Currently, users are required to be in an area with an unobstructed view, and are instructed to point in the direction of the satellite to connect.
However, Apple wants to make this process more “natural” for users. This will allow the iPhone to connect to satellites even when it is in a pocket or in a car, without the user having to hold the iPhone in the right way.
To achieve this, Gurman said Apple's 2026 iPhone lineup is expected to support the broader 5G NTN standard, which allows cell towers to use satellites to boost device coverage.
One of the biggest changes is that Apple is looking to expand the satellite connectivity functionality on the iPhone to third-party apps. Specifically, there will soon be a satellite service API created by Apple for app developers to integrate.
However, Gurman also suggests that not every satellite feature created by an iPhone maker will be offered this way.
In addition, Apple is also focusing on improving basic satellite functions. Expanding the existing messaging function is a possibility.
Accordingly, Apple is said to be developing an additional photo sending function, beyond the limit of just text messages in Emergency SOS via Satellite - a service that allows users to send distress messages even when they lose mobile signal.
Additionally, Gurman also revealed that Apple also seems to want to sync Apple Maps to work with satellite connections. While the satellite function is currently only used for location data, the Bloomberg reporter's post implies that map data could also be sent to users over satellite connections.
