Russian journalist and Deputy Speaker of the Moscow City Duma, Andrei Medvedev, believes that Iran is suffering a “disastrous defeat” in its war with Israel. Mr. Medvedev believes that, in fact, Iran has paid the price for “illusioning about its own strength” and not worrying about reforming its forces.
Medvedev analyzed that for quite a long time, Tehran has been quite successfully developing the strategy of "Shiite Resistance Belt". This belt involves Syria, southern Iraq, Lebanon, part of Bahrain and Yemen. Branches of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) operate well in Iraq and General Qasem Soleimani was instrumental in building this force.
But one or two talented leaders cannot carry out this strategy, and after the death of General Soleimani (assassinated by the US in Iraq), no equal has been found. And besides, the victories in Syria and Iraq are not Iran's own success.
The Russian military fought in Syria to save the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, and the Americans, French and British fought in Iraq to stop the self-proclaimed Islamic State. But Iran wants to erase all successes for its own benefit, and no analysis of the military actions is carried out, Medvedev concluded.
According to Mr Medvedev, Tehran has made fundamentally wrong conclusions. Five years ago, US analysts believed that Iran would increase its political influence in Syria and Iraq. It was argued that Tehran could reform its armed forces, although in principle its army is stronger than all the armies of the Gulf monarchies combined.
But those conclusions were wrong, the Iranian military was not reformed and they were trying to pressure Israel. The false reports created a false reality. In the end, Iran was not able to gain a foothold in Iraq, or rather could not increase its influence there to the level that would drag Iraq into a war today.
The collapse of the pro-Iran Syrian regime was a fatal blow to Tehran. The wars in Syria and Iraq created the impression that the Iranian military could fight in any conditions and with any enemy, especially with its large arsenal of ballistic missiles. But it turned out that Tehran was not prepared to fight a more technologically advanced enemy.
The fact is that due to geographical factors, Iran and Israel are 2,000 km apart, and the Iranians cannot imagine that Israel can mobilize tactical air forces to fight with them at high intensity and for a long time. Meanwhile, Israel has no military bases abroad.
Meanwhile, Iran has for many years focused on developing a medium-range ballistic missile force capable of reaching the entire Middle East. Tehran thinks it has superior power to the armed forces in the region, including Israel. But the Iranian thinking is correct, but not enough.
With a powerful air force, especially with the help of the US, in supporting aerial refueling aircraft, the distance of 2,000 km between Iran and Israel is shortened. While countries like Syria, Iraq or Jordan, only know how to "worry" when Israeli fighter planes fly over their airspace.
As the war between Israel and Iran enters a stalemate, US President Donald Trump is expected to issue an ultimatum to Iran in the coming hours today: Give up its nuclear program entirely, or the US and Israel will launch a joint attack on key targets.
White House sources said Iran is very close to being able to build nuclear weapons and the US will not allow this. The US President himself refused to participate in further negotiations with Iran. "I do not want to negotiate with Iran. I expect nothing less than their total surrender," Mr. Trump said.
Last night, it was reported that the White House was ready to make Iran a "Last Chance" offer. This would be a literal "ultimatum", but still based on the principle of "zero uranium enrichment", which the US wants.
At least four US Air Force Boeing KC-46A Pegasus refueling aircraft have taken off from Ramstein Air Base in Germany, heading to the Middle East, Russia's Sputnik news agency reported. Hours earlier, five other aerial refueling aircraft had taken off from the US.
Trump has suddenly changed his words and is ready to issue an ultimatum to Iran. Tanker planes are already on their way to the Gulf, it is highly likely that a decision on Iran “has been made”. In the eyes of Israel and the US, this is an “unbeatable” opportunity to change the power in Iran, one of the “thorns in the eye” of Tel Aviv and Washington.
