'Despicable Me' is the first animated series to gross $5 billion

This makes Despicable Me the first animated series to reach this milestone and the highest-grossing animated series of all time worldwide .

Despicable Me 4 - the sixth film in the Despicable Me series - is expected to be the No. 1 film in global revenue for the second consecutive week this weekend, adding an estimated $136 million through July 14, bringing its global total to $441 million, including $210.45 million in North America and $230.7 million in 78 international markets.

Despicable Me 4 opens in France, Germany, the UK and China this week. It opens in Japan on July 19, South Korea on July 24 and Italy on August 21.

So far, 26 international markets have had the biggest opening weekends for the franchise. The top five foreign markets through July 12 are: Australia ($20.8 million), Mexico ($19.5 million), Brazil ($10.5 million), Spain ($9 million) and Argentina ($8.1 million).

In North America, the Despicable Me series currently ranks as the 10th highest-grossing film of all time, ahead of Transformers ($1.74 billion), Hunger Games ($1.61 billion) and Shrek ($1.6 billion).

News of the $5 billion milestone comes as Universal last week set a June 30, 2027 release date for Minions 3. The film is being written by Brian Lynch and directed by Pierre Coffin, the filmmaker behind the first three Despicable Me films, Despicable Me 1, 2, 3 , and the original Minions . Coffin has also provided the voice for the Minions since their release in 2010.

Minions 3 is produced by Illumination founders and CEOs Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan.

Illumination has grossed more than $10 billion at the global box office. The animation studio has an exclusive financing and distribution partnership with Universal Pictures.

Despicable Me 4 has grossed VND89.3 billion in Vietnam since its release on July 5.
