Many shop owners said the number of customers ordering flowers has dropped by half, many regular customers and corporate customers instead of giving flowers have now switched to giving cash or practical gifts to employees.

October 20 flower market "falls petals"

Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online on the morning of October 20, Mr. Lam Phuong Toan - owner of Hana flower shop (old Go Vap district) - said that on the evening of October 19, the heavy rain continued, causing the number of customers to decrease sharply compared to previous years. "The area around my shop was still flooded, luckily I sell indoors so it's okay, but the outdoor stalls are all wet, so sad!", Mr. Toan said.

According to Mr. Toan, the number of customers ordering flowers this year has decreased by more than half compared to the same period last year. "Usually at this time every year, online orders are fully booked, but this year there are very few customers," he added.

Not only individual customers decreased, but also revenue from corporate customers dropped by 70% . Mr. Toan said that many agencies, companies, and even large FDI enterprises, this year did not order flowers for partners or decorate their offices like every year, but instead switched to finding gold or practical gifts for female employees.

"Both big and small customers are tightening their spending, so it's difficult to achieve the same revenue as before," Mr. Toan said with a sigh.

Similarly, at the Dalat Hasfarm store located on Hai Ba Trung Street (old District 1), Ms. Ngoc Anh, store manager, said the number of customers buying flowers for the holidays this year decreased by about 30% compared to the same period last year.

"Although it's near the peak season, there are still many pots of fresh flowers left. In previous years, they would have been almost sold out by this time. The difficult economy makes people reluctant to spend money on fresh flowers," Ms. Anh said.

Despite the decline in purchasing power, the market still has a small "bright spot". Mr. Tran Hoang Thai Duong, Director of Color Life Joint Stock Company - the unit managing the brand hoayeuthuong.com, said that the price of imported flowers this year is "more affordable" thanks to abundant supply, especially from China, which has reduced the price of fuel flowers by 20-30%.

Previously, every holiday season there was a "virtual flower fever" and prices were pushed up. This year, a large amount of imported flowers has helped balance the market and reduce capital pressure for sellers," said Mr. Duong.

According to Mr. Duong, thanks to that, stores can import more designs such as purple pink, pink, creating diversity for buyers. "Reduced raw material costs help stores avoid capital turnover or inventory shortages like previous years, and at the same time design more products that are more suitable for customers' budgets," said Mr. Duong.

Trend of giving flowers in practical combos

To attract more customers, many flower shops this year have flexibly innovated their products, not only selling traditional flower bouquets but also launching gift combos that are both eye-catching and practical.

Mr. Duong said that although flower and fruit combinations are not a new trend, they are still popular. "Customers like gifts that are usable, reasonable, and not wasteful , so orders for this type of gift still sell well," Mr. Duong said.

Similarly, Mr. Lam Phuong Toan , owner of Hana store, said that he had predicted that revenue could drop by up to 70%, so he proactively imported fewer flowers and created more flower designs combined with handbags or cakes to diversify the choices.

According to Mr. Toan, a combo of cake, decorative flowers and accessories costs from 350,000 to 600,000 VND, depending on the model. Particularly, flower products in the form of handbags cost from 500,000 VND to more than 1 million VND.

"The selling price remains at around 500,000 VND, but customers receive both cake and flowers, which are both beautiful and practical. This trend is suitable for young customers who like gifts that are eye-catching, easy to take pictures of, and post on social networks," said Mr. Toan.

As of late October 19, Mr. Toan said that the flower handbag models at the store had sold more than 70% of the imported quantity. The flower and cake combo line alone had only reached about 40% of the plan and was expected to increase on the last peak day.

Besides focusing on designing "delicious - nutritious - cheap" models, giant flower models worth several million VND have been almost absent this year. "Only when customers place a special order do we start designing, but so far there have been no high-end orders," said Mr. Toan.

Many retailers said that although purchasing power on October 19 was quite slow, they still expect that by the end of October 20, the number of customers will increase to compensate for revenue.
