Self-driving car tours through Mong Cai border gate are expected to be launched from October 30 and Vietnamese tourists can travel to Nanning City, China.
This program is part of the plan to promote tourism development between the two countries, proposed by the authorities of Mong Cai City and Dongxing City to be implemented from March this year, according to the People's Committee of Mong Cai City.
There is currently no specific information about the number of vehicles and the method of implementation, but it is expected that Chinese visitors can drive themselves to Ha Long City (150 km from Mong Cai) and Vietnamese visitors can go to Nanning City, 600 km from Mong Cai.
In 2016, self-driving cars from China to Quang Ninh were piloted with limited operations in Mong Cai city. A minimum of 5 cars per entry and a maximum of 20 cars per convoy. The total number of Chinese self-driving cars in Vietnam is not more than 100 per day and no more than 3 days per license.

After one year of implementation, there were 93 vehicles with 256 tourists from China passing through Mong Cai. In the opposite direction, there were 38 vehicles with 110 tourists from Vietnam to Dong Hung City.
In 2018, the Government agreed to allow Quang Ninh to expand the scope of Chinese self-driving cars to Ha Long City. Vietnamese tourists driving to China are allowed to enter Guilin City. According to statistics, from June to November 2018, the Chinese side had 44 groups of tourists entering Ha Long by car, with a total of 289 cars and 988 passengers. The Vietnamese side had 35 cars with 108 passengers entering China. After the Covid-19 outbreak, self-driving car tours were suspended.
In the first 9 months of 2023, Mong Cai City welcomed 1.9 million visitors.
