Opening of the Press Cup 2025 Football Tournament - Southern qualifying round

On the morning of May 21, the Southern qualifying round of the 2025 National Press Cup Football Tournament took place at Phu Tho Football Stadium (HCMC). Eight football teams from central newspapers and radio stations and HCMC entered the competition right after the opening ceremony.

Mr. Tran Trong Dung, Vice President of Vietnam Journalists Association , spoke at the opening ceremony.

The football tournament has been jointly organized by the Vietnam Journalists Association, the Press Department (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) and Vietnam Family Magazine since 2016 to promote the movement of sports training, especially football, among journalists nationwide.

The event not only creates a playground but also aims to improve cultural and spiritual life, strengthen the relationship of exchange and learning between cadres, reporters, and editors in each press agency and between press agencies.

The 2025 National Press Agency Football Tournament - Press Cup is part of a series of cultural and sports activities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2025) and the 80th anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025).

The matches were exciting right from the opening round.

The Southern Regional Qualifiers of the Press Cup 2025 featured eight teams, divided into two groups. After the opening ceremony, the first qualifying matches took place in both groups. In Group A, the Tuoi Tre Newspaper team lost 2-4 to the Thanh Nien Newspaper team after leading by two goals; the Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper team tied 3-3 with the Ho Chi Minh City Law Newspaper/Tri Thuc Magazine Znews Alliance.

In Group B, Ho Chi Minh City Television won 2-1 over Ho Chi Minh City People's Radio Station while the match between VnExpress and Vietnam Television Center in Ho Chi Minh City ended in a 2-2 draw.

On May 22, the second and third matches of both groups will continue in two morning and afternoon sessions, deciding the tickets to the semi-finals.

The 2025 Press Cup Football Tournament - Southern region will take place from May 21 to 24, selecting the two strongest teams to participate in the national final round, scheduled to be held in Bac Ninh from June 5 to 7. The 2025 Press Cup champion will participate in a friendly match for the Super Cup with the Thai Press team on June 10 in Hanoi.
