Logistics is a service industry that brings high added value, not only supporting the development of production and circulation of goods, but also contributing to the development of transport infrastructure and information technology. With many potentials and outstanding advantages, especially in the industrial sector, Thai Nguyen is oriented to develop into a logistics center of the region.

Outstanding advantages
Thai Nguyen is considered to have great potential for developing the logistics industry thanks to its favorable geographical location and developed transport infrastructure. In many Party resolutions, Thai Nguyen is identified as an important growth pole of the midland and mountainous region of the North.
On the momentum of strong industrial, construction and mining development, along with the advantages of being a gateway for economic and social exchange between the midlands, mountainous areas and the Northern Delta, the construction of the province to become a regional logistics center is in the near future.
According to the Provincial Planning, Thai Nguyen has 11 industrial parks (IPs) and 1 concentrated information technology park with a total area of 4,245 hectares. Currently, in the IPs, there are 313 projects with valid investment registration certificates (including 177 FDI projects with registered investment capital of more than 10.5 billion USD and 137 DDI projects with registered investment capital of 22,361 billion VND). Thai Nguyen has 12 industrial clusters (ICs) in operation, including 63 investment projects with a total capital of over 9,492 billion VND. |
In recent years, Thai Nguyen has implemented many key transport projects to synchronously connect industrial parks and clusters with provinces (such as: Linking routes connecting Thai Nguyen - Bac Giang - Vinh Phuc provinces; Ring Road V of the Hanoi Capital Region; Thai Nguyen - Bac Kan Expressway; Ho Chi Minh Road, Cho Chu section, Dinh Hoa district - Trung Son intersection, Tuyen Quang province...), meeting the increasing demand for freight transport.
If in 2017, the amount of goods transported by road in the province reached 37,490 thousand tons, by 2021 it increased to 44,737 thousand tons. On average, the amount of goods transported by road increases annually by nearly 5%. Looking at the picture above, it can be seen that Thai Nguyen has a huge source of goods, the demand for transportation across the country and internationally by road, sea, air...
Not yet "attracted" many businesses to participate
According to statistics, currently in the province there is no unit that performs all stages of logistics services. Although the number of enterprises participating in providing logistics services has increased significantly in recent years, they are mainly small-scale and have limited financial resources, so they only participate in one or some stages of this type of service such as transportation and delivery services. Currently, Thai Nguyen has 2 "large" enterprises specializing in logistics services: Thai Hung Logistics Company Limited and ASG Logistics Joint Stock Company.

Thai Hung Logistics LLC was established in December 2021 (formerly the Logistics Department of Thai Hung Trading Joint Stock Company). Thanks to effectively exploiting the potential of logistics services, the Company has made strong progress. If the revenue in 2021 was 180 billion VND, it increased to 200 billion VND by 2023. In the first 10 months of 2024, the Company achieved a revenue of 200 billion VND, striving to reach 250 billion VND by the end of this year.
Mr. Tran Nguyen Hung, Deputy Director of Thai Hung Logistics LLC: The company is responsible for all input and output of Thai Hung Trading JSC. Currently, the company has 70 tractors and is associated with 5 transport units with an additional capacity of about 100 trucks and 100 barges to serve the loading and unloading of goods at Hoang Dieu, Doan Xa, Vat Cach ports (Hai Phong city); Hon Net port, Quang Ninh province. On average, the company loads and unloads about 100,000 tons of goods per month. In addition to serving Thai Hung, the company currently has 2 major customers: Viet Y Steel JSC (supplying about 500,000 tons of goods per year) and Viet Duc Steel Company (supplying about 100,000 tons of goods per year).
In addition to Thai Hung, many FDI enterprises and large enterprises in the province are currently "regular" customers of ASG Logistics Joint Stock Company. ASG Logistics Joint Stock Company (ASGL) was established in 2013 in Yen Binh Industrial Park. Major customers of ASGL include: Samsung Electronics Vietnam Thai Nguyen, Samsung SDS, Nui Phao Mineral Exploitation and Processing Company Limited and Masan Tungsten Company Limited, Nippon Express Joint Venture Company Limited, TNG...
According to the leader of ASG Logistics Joint Stock Company, with the vision of becoming a leading 3PL (third-party logistics) service provider and supply chain organization in Vietnam, the company's goal is to become a 3PL, 4PL service provider and supply chain organization developing 2 main areas: Investing and exploiting logistics infrastructure, extended air warehouses, logistics centers, ICDs, river ports. Services promote the development of aviation logistics, service provision and multimodal transportation services.
“Awaken” potential
In order to exploit the potential and strengths in this field, at a recent meeting with the delegation of Vietnam Post Corporation and VTC Multimedia Corporation, Comrade Nguyen Huy Dung, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thai Nguyen province, emphasized: In the digital age, Thai Nguyen aims to continue to be the logistics center of the region. Thai Nguyen is interested in promoting the development of transport infrastructure with regional connectivity and developing digital infrastructure with the establishment of data centers. He hopes that in the coming time, Vietnam Post Corporation will pay attention to supporting Thai Nguyen to become the logistics center of the region.

In reality, Thai Nguyen's logistics service industry has not lived up to its potential. In discussions with leaders of the provincial Automobile Transport Association, many opinions stated that the province still does not have a truly modern warehouse system; businesses have not yet deeply participated in the logistics service chain, which has significantly limited the ability to circulate goods.
According to Mr. Tran Nguyen Hung, Deputy Director of Thai Hung Logistics Company Limited: Da Phuc inland port (the only inland port of the province) currently has outdated loading and unloading equipment, no warehouse, goods are mainly covered with tarpaulins that do not ensure safety. If the province pays attention to investing in dredging the channel to Da Phuc port and building a modern warehouse system, logistics services will certainly develop more. In addition, the province needs to pay attention to training human resources to serve this field, especially training FC class drivers.
Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Quang Huy, former Principal of Thai Nguyen University of Economics and Business Administration (who has many years of research on logistics): The province needs to pay attention to building a master plan for developing logistics services, especially investing in building dry ports along the transport corridor; continue to synchronously develop transport infrastructure from roads to waterways, stations, warehouses, wharves as well as cargo handling equipment. Pay attention to developing logistics associated with e-commerce.
In reality, Thai Nguyen has many advantages in terms of geographical location, conditions, and the demand for professional freight transport is increasing. However, in order for logistics services to develop commensurate with their potential, along with the efforts of enterprises, it is necessary to have strategic orientation and planning for logistics service development, increase investment in infrastructure construction, and support policies from the province.
