On the occasion of the 135th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birthday (May 19, 1890 - May 19, 2025), on May 19, the University of Havana (Cuba) officially launched the Ho Chi Minh Research Department, under the Faculty of Philosophy, History and Sociology. This event marks an important step forward in the academic and cultural cooperation between Vietnam and Cuba.
The establishment of the department aims to promote specialized, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research, especially focusing on the thoughts, works and historical heritage of President Ho Chi Minh.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Cuba Le Quang Long emphasized: May 19 is a day of special significance for the people of Vietnam and Cuba. May 19 is the birthday of President Ho Chi Minh - the great and outstanding leader of the Vietnamese people and May 19 is also the day Cuban national hero José Martí sacrificed his life on the battlefield fighting for independence for his country. Both great leaders of Vietnam and Cuba are symbols of patriotism, revolution and the struggle for freedom and national independence.
Emphasizing the significance of the University of Havana establishing the Department of “Ho Chi Minh” studies, Ambassador Le Quang Long said that this Department will contribute to deepening the special friendship and solidarity between the two countries; at the same time, enhancing mutual understanding between the Vietnamese and Cuban people, especially the younger generation.
Ho Chi Minh's ideology is not only the guiding principle for the Vietnamese revolution but also the inspiration for national liberation movements and anti-oppression struggles around the world . President Ho Chi Minh was honored by UNESCO as a "Hero of National Liberation and a Great Man of Culture" in 1987, and his image has become a symbol of peace, freedom and justice around the world.

The Department will manage and coordinate research, training and cooperation expansion projects to make practical contributions to the development of Vietnam-Cuba relations in the academic and cultural fields.
