Quang Ninh is the locality with the largest area of fallen rice in the province with about 530 hectares of rice, concentrated in the communes: Vo Ninh 198 hectares, Tan Ninh 110 hectares, An Ninh 96 hectares, Hien Ninh 79 hectares, Ham Ninh 65 hectares... Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Ninh district Tran Van Trung said: The district and other units have inspected the situation to count the damaged rice area and directed and guided people to overcome the fallen area by mobilizing pumps to drain water in the fields; for some areas of green rice, people are encouraged to erect trees and bundle rice into clusters to prevent the rice from sprouting, reducing damage.
Worried about crop failure, many farmers in the district went to the fields to save the rice to minimize damage. In the fields of The Loc village, Tan Ninh commune, a large area of rice fell down. Early in the morning, Mr. Nguyen Van Tam brought the machine down to pump out all the water in the field, limiting the rice from germinating, waiting for a sunny day to harvest.
Mr. Tam said: This winter-spring crop, his family has planted 5 sao of VN20 rice. Thanks to good care and pest control, the yield is estimated at 65 quintals/ha. Around the hamlet, many families have harvested green rice, but he waits for the rice to ripen before harvesting. If the weather is favorable, his family's rice acreage can be harvested in about a week. However, yesterday's heavy rain caused most of his family's rice acreage to break and fall to the ground. Because the rice is about to ripen, draining water and flooding now will limit damage. If the rice is not harvested in time in the next few days, the rice may sprout, causing even greater damage.
In Vo Ninh commune, the rice area was quite large, from early morning, Mrs. Bui Thi Tien, Truc Ly village went to visit the field. Mrs. Tien said, fortunately, thanks to the staff of Truc Ly Agricultural Service Cooperative, the damage was not significant, but the cost of harvesting will be higher than usual.
The winter-spring rice fields of Bac Ly ward (Dong Hoi city) were also devastated and desolate because dozens of hectares of rice were knocked down due to the heavy rain. After the rain, Ms. Hoang Thi Ha and some farmers also checked the damage on her family's rice fields. Ms. Ha said: This winter-spring crop, her family planted 10 sao of VN20 rice. The rice was 10 days away from harvest, but heavy rains have broken most of it. Another difficulty is that this area cannot be drained because the fields are in low-lying areas, lower than the canals and irrigation systems, so the rice is still flooded. If not harvested in time, the rice will sprout, causing even greater damage.
According to statistics, this winter-spring crop, Dong Hoi City planted 792 hectares of rice, of which more than 154 hectares were broken. In addition, the locality also had more than 27 hectares of vegetables, crops such as sugarcane, watermelon, cassava, etc. also broken and flooded due to rain. Currently, the local government has inspected and assessed the damage, instructed people to drain water, take advantage of sunny days to quickly harvest, limit rice germination, affecting productivity and quality.
In the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, the whole province planted 29,133 hectares of rice. Currently, early-season rice and main-season rice are in the stage of ripening, while late-season rice is in the stage of panicle-bearing and flowering. However, heavy rains have caused many winter-spring rice areas of farmers in the province to collapse; of which, Quang Ninh district has over 530 hectares, Bo Trach 434.2 hectares, Le Thuy 384.8 hectares, Ba Don town 59 hectares and Dong Hoi city 154.6 hectares.
The provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection warned that the weather is still complicated with extreme phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, strong winds... which are at risk of continuing to affect the unharvested rice area. Therefore, farmers need to proactively harvest as soon as possible to reduce the impact on rice yield and quality. |
To minimize yield losses, the People's Committees of districts, towns and cities need to direct and urge farmers to closely monitor weather developments to proactively take timely response measures. For areas of fallen green rice, instruct farmers to erect trees and tie 4-5 rice clumps so that the rice can continue to accumulate dry matter into the grain, limiting the rate of damaged or germinated rice. For areas of ripening rice, harvest early to limit germination and grain shedding, affecting yield and quality.
