Investment in development of mountainous areas

Thanks to the State's investment, from electricity - roads - schools - stations to housing and production support for people, the appearance of ethnic minority and mountainous areas of Khanh Hoa province has changed positively.

Over the past 5 years, Khanh Hoa province has invested 5,600 billion VND in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. Capital from national target programs has focused on investing and supporting extremely disadvantaged communes and villages to implement policies such as: Support for housing construction, residential land, production land, domestic water; investment in cultural, medical, educational facilities, roads; support for production development according to value chains, job creation, increasing people's income..., creating conditions for people to conveniently access basic social services, essential infrastructure has been gradually invested and completed to serve people's lives and production, and circulation of goods in the locality.

Thanks to the support of the State, many ethnic minority households have escaped poverty and become good farmers and businessmen in their localities. A typical example is Ms. Mau Thi Hiem in Son Trung commune, Khanh Son district.

Ms. Hiem said: My family currently has 1 hectare of durian that is being harvested, and the last crop brought in nearly 400 million VND. In addition to growing durian, my husband and I also dig ponds to raise carp and silver carp; raise black pigs, etc., earning an additional 100 million VND each year. Thanks to the stable income, I have been able to build a spacious house and take care of my children's education.

Ha Thong, a T'Rin ethnic group (a branch of the K'Ho people) in Khanh Phu commune, Khanh Vinh district, is also a good farmer and businessman. Determined to escape poverty, Ha Thong does not mind hardships, always researching and learning to develop his family's economy.

He currently has a livestock farm with 20 cows and a 6-year-old grapefruit garden that is producing fruit regularly. Not only that, with his hard-working nature, Ha Thong and his wife also do the job of purchasing and selling acacia. Thong's family's total income is nearly 400 million VND/year.

Help people settle down

Khanh Hoa is a pioneer in implementing the joint effort to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses for poor and near-poor households, mainly ethnic minority households, across the province. Currently, more than 1,550 repaired houses have been completed; the last houses out of a total of more than 1,780 newly built houses are being urgently implemented so that by the end of 2024, the province will complete the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses for poor and near-poor households, 1 year earlier than the rest of the country.

Visiting the extremely disadvantaged commune of Thanh Son, Khanh Son district, we visited Mr. Cao Cuong's household, one of the households that received support to build a house. Mr. Cuong shared: Previously, his family lived in a makeshift house surrounded by old corrugated iron sheets; the income from the banana plantation was not much, food and clothing had to be calculated day by day, so building a new house was something he did not dare to think about.

“At the end of 2023, my family received 80 million VND in support from the State, plus 40 million VND in counterpart funds to demolish the dilapidated house. The new house is a fulcrum for my family to strive to develop the economy,” Mr. Cuong excitedly shared.

In Suoi Ca village, a particularly difficult village in Khanh Trung commune, Khanh Vinh district, Mr. Cao Xuan Phu's family is also very happy to receive financial support to build a house. In the new house that still smells of paint, Mr. Phu said: My wife and I have just moved into the new house for 2 months, and have also bought some new household items such as tables, chairs, TV, refrigerator... Recalling the days when the whole family had to live in a house with a leaky corrugated iron roof and rotten wooden walls, Mr. Phu still has tears in his eyes.

“The day the village cadres went to check the poor households, they asked me if I was confident of escaping poverty. I told them the truth: I am not confident without a new house! Now that we have settled down and our jobs in Suoi Dau Industrial Park are stable, I am not worried anymore! We have to try to make a living to have a better life, no one wants to be poor forever,” said Mr. Phu.
