Recently, on the social network YouTube appeared a video recording the steering wheel of a Chinese car brand Omoda C5 being ripped off with bare hands. This video immediately attracted the attention of both viewers and the media with 1.4 million views within 2 weeks.
The YouTube channel that posted this video is TVN Turbo from Poland. In this video, the reporter compared two cars from the Omoda and Skoda brands, including testing the durability of the steering wheel. When the host only moved the steering column up and down, nothing unusual happened. When the host jerked the steering wheel towards him, the whole assembly almost immediately popped out of the pin.

This video has made many viewers feel confused and worried about the assembly quality of Chinese cars. However, there are also people who question whether the video was staged. Many people think that the video production team intentionally loosened the bolt holding part of the steering column so that the Chinese car looks inferior to the Skoda in the test.
From another angle, the Omoda C5 can be seen to be damaged. Therefore, no one has dared to confirm whether the entire steering wheel was loosened due to a previous collision or if the TVN Turbo crew intentionally loosened it to increase attention for the new program.

The Omoda brand, owned by the Chery Group, has officially responded after the video went viral. "Omoda & Jaecoo respects the role of independent media and the importance of automotive journalism, especially in testing and evaluating vehicles under various conditions of use," the Chinese car group began in a press release.
According to Omoda, the incident in the TVN Turbo video occurred during an extreme test that does not reflect the normal conditions of use of the vehicle. " Omoda does not deny the video, but emphasizes that it has not received any technical data or official documentation from this incident, and according to the information we have, TVN Turbo does not have either ."

“ The structure of the steering column on the Omoda 5 is designed for driver safety and complies with ECE R12 regulation, which deals with the protection of the driver from impact to the steering system in the event of an accident. In the video, the steering wheel adjustment lock can be seen being released, after which the driver repeatedly pulls the steering wheel forward, backward, up and down, using all the strength and inertia of the upper part of the steering column, including the steering wheel and the airbag ,” the company continued to explain.
Omoda says the entire steering column weighs about 9 kg, the steering wheel weighs 3 kg, and the airbag weighs 1 kg. According to Omoda, the tester applied a force equivalent to about 5.5 kg to the upper part of the steering column. The upper attachment points are intentionally designed to separate when the force exceeds the threshold. The company claims that when a healthy man pulls with all his strength, combined with the inertia of the upper part of the steering column, the guard will function as designed, that is, separate.

According to the company, the guards worked exactly as intended. When the force exceeded the allowable level, the upper part of the lightweight alloy and plastic was designed to “release”, allowing the steering column to move, protecting the driver in a collision. In other words, there was no mechanical fault in this incident.
" This structural solution enhances driver safety. Thanks to the detachable attachment points, rescuers do not need to use heavy equipment to free people trapped in the cockpit, thereby increasing the chances of survival ," Omoda asserted in a press release.
In the Polish market, the Chery automobile group is present through two brands Omoda and Jaecoo. Recently, the company also launched a Chery-branded SUV line in this European market.
