Prosecuted 36 cases, 119 defendants for smuggling, trade fraud, counterfeit goods production

At the regular Government press conference on the afternoon of June 4, Major General Nguyen Quoc Toan, Chief of Office and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Public Security, informed about the results of the recent peak period of crackdown on counterfeit and fake goods related to drugs and functional foods.

Major General Nguyen Quoc Toan said that implementing the Prime Minister 's Official Dispatch No. 65/CD-TTg on launching a peak period to fight against smuggling, trade fraud, counterfeit goods, and intellectual property infringement, the Ministry of Public Security directed the drastic implementation with 3 key contents.

Specifically, the Ministry of Public Security directed local police to launch a high-level attack and suppression in this field for 3 months starting from May 15. Along with that, the Ministry of Public Security's forces joined the Government's Working Group to fight and prevent this situation in accordance with the spirit of the Official Dispatch.

The Ministry of Public Security also continues to advise on the promulgation of institutions to overcome shortcomings in state management in this field. At the same time, it recommends increasing penalties to deter criminals.

Major General Nguyen Quoc Toan said that through the fight, the Ministry of Public Security has identified a number of prominent issues. Specifically, crimes related to smuggled goods, counterfeit goods, poor quality goods, and food safety and hygiene are very complicated, with large-scale and prolonged cases. Subjects take advantage of loopholes in the law to commit violations. Among them, counterfeit goods are produced and traded very commonly, especially cosmetics, food, medicine, etc., directly affecting people's health. Along with that is the situation of false advertising through famous people and prestigious people. In which, there is cover-up by some officials in state management agencies.

Regarding the results of the fight, Major General Nguyen Quoc Toan said that as of June 3, the forces of the Ministry of Public Security have prosecuted 36 cases and 119 defendants related to the crimes of smuggling, trade fraud, counterfeit goods production and other acts in 24 localities.

The forces of the Ministry of Public Security also handled the acts of complicity of some state agency officials, including prosecuting some defendants. The Ministry of Public Security also handled and clarified the acts of false advertising.

Regarding the upcoming tasks, Major General Nguyen Quoc Toan said that the Ministry of Public Security will continue to deploy a 3-month peak to deeply and thoroughly evaluate this content in accordance with the spirit of the Government's Official Dispatch.

“Fighting against counterfeit goods and trade fraud is a regular, continuous and long-term task. The focus is on resolutely fighting against violations of the law in the production and trade of counterfeit goods, poor quality goods, intellectual property infringement, goods of unknown origin, as well as handling the responsibility of those who advertise falsely, including celebrities,” Major General Nguyen Quoc Toan emphasized.

Along with that, the Ministry of Public Security continues to accelerate the investigation and handling of recent violations, with the spirit of strictly handling violators, thereby clarifying the causes of violations and loopholes in the legal system. At the same time, the Ministry continues to coordinate with relevant units to strengthen state management in this field as mentioned in the Official Dispatch.

For each citizen, be vigilant against products advertised as multi-purpose, cheap, and miracle drugs; at the same time, promptly report to the authorities for strict handling.
