The recent floods and storm No. 13 have left many serious consequences for the lives and agricultural production of Quang Ngai province. In the agricultural sector alone, the total damage is estimated at up to 160 billion VND. In this situation, on November 20, the National Agricultural Extension Center coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Ngai province to organize a seminar to guide the restoration of production after floods to support people to quickly rebuild agricultural activities and improve their capacity to respond to increasingly extreme natural disasters.

Mr. Ung Van Thanh, Director of the Agricultural Extension Center of Quang Ngai province, said that the recent floods caused about 160 billion VND in damage to the agricultural sector in Quang Ngai province. Photo: LK
In many coastal areas of Quang Ngai province, aquaculture farmers suffered relatively heavy losses. In Co Luy Bac village (An Phu commune), Mr. Le Van Ca (73 years old) said that the prolonged heavy rain and high waves broke some of his family's fish and white-leg shrimp ponds. Unable to respond in time, all the aquatic products in the pond were swept away by the floodwaters, causing damage of about 100 million VND. Up to this point, the waves continue to cause landslides, making his family afraid to resume production.
According to Mr. Ung Van Thanh, Director of the Agricultural Extension Center of Quang Ngai province, after the flood, the agricultural extension system from the central to local levels urgently implemented many support activities such as providing technical guidance on crop and livestock recovery; supporting materials and biological products; organizing training and going to the fields directly to help farmers overcome the damage.

“The reality of floods and rains requires research into production models that adapt to climate change, solutions for winter crops after natural disasters, restoration of livestock and aquaculture ponds, and application of digital technology in agricultural management. In addition, it is necessary to synchronize policies to support production reconstruction and minimize natural disaster risks,” said Mr. Thanh.
The seminar was an opportunity to comprehensively assess the damage situation, share effective recovery models and propose appropriate solutions and policies. The National Agricultural Extension Center sent working groups to inspect the actual damage to crops, livestock and aquaculture in many localities of the province. Experts directly guided the process of crop treatment, environmental sanitation of barns and ponds to ensure biosafety before re-production. The goal is to minimize the risk of disease after floods and at the same time improve the efficiency of the next crop.
Mr. Phan Tan (55 years old, Thanh An village, An Phu commune) shared that every year, local people suffer damage due to floods, especially in shrimp farming areas. Previously, people mainly treated ponds themselves based on experience, with low efficiency. Attending this seminar, Mr. Tan highly appreciated being guided on the process of treating ponds in a systematic way, from water treatment, shrimp health care to how to use biological products. He said he would immediately apply it to production and share the knowledge with households not present at the training session.

Mr. Hoang Van Hong, Deputy Director of the National Agricultural Extension Center, emphasized that after the damage, the production reconstruction process must be scientific and follow the correct procedures. Photo: LK
In addition to technical support, the National Agricultural Extension Center and businesses have donated agricultural materials to Quang Ngai province, including 3 tons of NPK fertilizer, 100 liters of nano foliar fertilizer, 150 kg and 150 liters of probiotics to treat the pond environment, and 32 liters of livestock disinfectants. This is a practical source of support to help people stabilize production soon.
Mr. Hoang Van Hong, Deputy Director of the National Agricultural Extension Center, shared that climate change is becoming more and more extreme, causing many localities across the country, including the Central region, to continuously suffer damage from storms No. 10 to 13. Storm No. 13 alone caused widespread flooding and landslides, causing heavy losses to crops, aquatic products and livestock. According to him, the Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment have issued many drastic instructions requiring localities to focus on restoring production after natural disasters.
“In Quang Ngai, the National Agricultural Extension Center focuses on supporting three key areas. First, providing guidance on disinfecting livestock barns, preventing diseases and safely restocking. Second, providing technical support for aquaculture pond restoration, water environment treatment and guidance on the process of preparing for a new crop. For flooded fruit trees, experts provide guidance on pruning, clearing the garden, clearing the flow and adding fertilizers and biological products to help the trees recover quickly,” Mr. Hong shared.

Through the survey, the National Agricultural Extension Center assessed that the damage to the people was very large, requiring the reconstruction process to be carried out scientifically and according to the correct procedures. Mr. Hoang Van Hong advised people to comply with the crop calendar, meteorological forecasts and technical recommendations of the agricultural sector to reduce risks. Production organization must be linked to natural disaster forecasts, especially in areas that are frequently flooded or affected by high tides and storms.
In the context of increasingly unusual natural disasters, improving people's self-reliance, increasing forecasting ability and applying science and technology in production are considered the keys to ensuring sustainable livelihoods. Practical support activities in Quang Ngai are an important basis to help farmers quickly overcome difficulties, stabilize production and better prepare for the next crop season.
