Experience of traveling to places with ice and snow

VnExpressVnExpress24/01/2024

In places where there is ice and snow, the temperature often drops low, so visitors need to prepare carefully in terms of clothing to avoid catching a cold.

The North is in the period of the lowest temperature since the beginning of the season, many places have frost such as Phia Oac peak (Cao Bang), Mau Son (Lang Son), Binh Lieu (Quang Ninh). When traveling to these places to see ice, tourists should note the following, based on the experience of Mr. Vu Minh Quan, a photographer who has successfully hunted snow many times, and Mr. Lekima Hung, who specializes in organizing phototour programs to famous tourist destinations in and outside the country.

Ice and snow hunting experience

Usually, when the temperature drops in the North, frost appears, but it does not always snow. Snow falls from the clouds above, while frost forms right on the ground, from the freezing of water vapor.

It doesn't always snow when it's really cold. Mr. Vu Minh Quan said, "It's most likely to snow when it's drizzling, but it's hard to snow when it's too dry, even if it's very cold."

"If the current cold spell is accompanied by rain and the temperature in Hanoi drops to 6-7 degrees, the mountainous areas in the North can completely have snow when the temperature is around 0 degrees," said Mr. Quan.

In Vietnam, snow usually falls for a very short time, sometimes only a few hours a day, like the heavy snowfalls in 2013, 2016 and 2021. Mr. Quan also added that hunting for snow sometimes requires "luck".

"It's best to see a snow warning before arriving" or otherwise stay a few days in areas that may get snow during the cold spell.

About clothing in cold and snowy weather

- Warm enough clothes, indispensable items are hats, socks and scarves. Clothes include many layers: moisture-proof layer, heat-retaining layer, insulation layer and wind-proof layer (rainproof). Wearing tight pants inside will help keep warm better.

Depending on the weather and time of outdoor activities, you can choose suitable clothing from these four layers of clothing.

- If you do a lot of physical activity, such as mountain climbing, you don't need to wear a thermal layer, but you still need to keep your ears and hands warm.

- Shoes have thick lining to keep feet warm, soles have spikes (patterns) to help prevent slipping in slippery terrain. If the destination has snow, you need to wear specialized shoes.

- You should have a heat patch just in case, to stick on the back or soles of the feet, can be used while sleeping or during the day, effective time is about 8 hours.

- You should bring a thermos with hot water mixed with ginger tea, a drink that is good for warming the body.

- You should bring some medicine, in addition to digestive medicine, you need cold and cough medicine. A bottle of essential oil will also be very useful in many cases.
