Doctors at the Emergency Department of Vinh Phuc General Hospital have just received and treated 3 cases in a family showing signs of poisoning after eating jicama seeds.
The patient is Mr. VTT (34 years old) and his two children (residing in Kim Long commune, Tam Duong). Mr. T said that in the afternoon of the same day, he went to his garden and saw a jicama plant with seeds. He picked it and boiled it to eat for dinner. His two children tried it and found it bitter so they stopped eating it, but Mr. T ate more.
About 15 minutes after eating, Mr. T experienced nausea, vomiting, and dizziness, so his wife took him and his two children to Vinh Phuc General Hospital for emergency care.

Thanks to timely emergency care, Mr. T's health condition is now stable. As for Mr. T's two children, due to eating little, the signs of poisoning were unclear, and they have been transferred to the Pediatrics Department for further monitoring.
Doctors at Vinh Phuc General Hospital said that the stem, leaves, flowers, and seeds of the jicama plant contain Rotenon - a toxic substance often used as a pesticide.
If you eat jicama seeds, after about 30 minutes to 1 hour, the patient may experience poisoning symptoms such as headache, dizziness, stomachache, nausea, drowsiness...
In more severe cases, the patient may fall into a coma, have convulsions, stop breathing, stop heart, and lead to rapid death.
In particular, there is no specific antidote for rotenone poisoning in jicama seeds and symptoms can progress very quickly. If not detected and treated promptly, the patient can die within 2-5 hours after ingesting the poison.
