The animated film "Kung Fu Panda 4" became a foreign film phenomenon at the Vietnamese box office, quickly reaching over 100 billion VND in revenue after 2 weeks of release.
According to statistics from Box Office Vietnam (an independent box office statistics unit), as of the evening of March 21, the movie Kung Fu Panda 4 has reached the milestone of 102 billion VND, ranking second in the total box office revenue of Vietnam. The work has an average of over 1,700 screenings per day with a high occupancy rate.
Not only in Vietnam, in recent days, Kung Fu Panda 4 has also "made waves" at the global box office system. According to statistics from Box Office Mojo, this animated film has surpassed the revenue mark of 179 million USD, of which, nearly 70 million USD came from the international market.
The film is expected to surpass $500 million worldwide by the end of its run.
Regarding the appeal of the Kung Fu Panda series, a representative of the distributor CJ CGV Vietnam shared with Dan Tri reporter that Kung Fu Panda is a brand that has a solid position in the hearts of audiences of many generations.
This is considered the first film to receive an Oscar nomination from DreamWorks Animation, and is also the highest-grossing animated film in the history of this famous film studio, launching an animated brand that has earned nearly 2 billion USD from global box offices.
In addition, Kung Fu Panda has a way of building characters that are close to not only children but also adults. The panda Po - the main character of the series - is built as a useless, playful person but goes through a harsh journey of maturity, conquering the peaks of martial arts with miraculous learning speed and defeating the bad guys.
"Because Kung Fu Panda is so attractive, the number of screenings of the film also increased sharply during the week. In addition, the number of animated films released in theaters in a month in Vietnam is not much, so when there is a work with great appeal, adults often take the opportunity to take their children to the theater right away for entertainment," said a representative of distributor CJ CGV Vietnam.

Explaining the success of foreign animated films in Vietnam, director and Meritorious Artist Bui Trung Hai said that in the opinion of international producers and filmmakers, animated films are not only for children but also for adults.
"That viewpoint governs the scale of production, artistry, entertainment, professionalism, character development, story... of animated films. Everything must reach a very high level of professionalism, and must satisfy all audiences, especially being very convenient for the whole family to go to the theater and enjoy the film together, which is also one of the conditions to bring in the highest revenue," said Mr. Hai.
According to director Bui Trung Hai, American animated films are often invested in very large amounts, no less than feature films. Kung Fu Panda 4 has a production budget of up to 85 million USD, with big actors participating in dubbing such as Dustin Hoffman, Quan Ke Huy, Awkwafina...
The screenplay is also very carefully invested, usually a story with a tight 3-act structure, not inferior in terms of professional level compared to a feature film script.
"Many American animated films have been considered models of film direction, script, structure, character development, animation, sound, music ...
"Kung Fu Panda 4 is very successful in continuing the series that had 3 previous parts. This attraction is partly due to the fact that the previous Kung Fu Panda parts were very successful, especially the opening parts, creating great sympathy for viewers," Mr. Hai shared with Dan Tri reporter.
Agreeing with the above views, director, People's Artist Pham Ngoc Tuan - General Director of Vietnam Animation Film Studio Joint Stock Company - emphasized that the reason foreign animation films are successful in many world markets is because they have a systematic and long-term investment strategy.
Besides good scripts and modern, advanced filmmaking methods, foreign animators can create iconic and copyrighted characters, thereby creating a distinct culture and a related industry such as toys, fashion , music, etc.

However, Kung Fu Panda 4 still received mixed reviews. Many people said that the film was not as good as expected. The Reviewer website said that considering the entertainment level and the influence of Po on the audience, the film is definitely worth watching, but if you were to strictly evaluate a film, it is clear that part 4 has a very ordinary story.
Director, Meritorious Artist Bui Trung Hai also commented that this fourth part is not really excellent compared to the previous parts. The action part of Kung Fu Panda is very attractive, however, the witty, humorous part of Po and the very good change in personality, the maturity of Po through the battles with opponents are not highlighted as in the first parts.
"However, the film still has very impressive action, is attractive, has an unexpected structure of the story... so in general, the impression of the film on Vietnamese audiences is still very big, that is clearly seen through the amazed, enthusiastic reactions of children and viewers in the cinema.
This also clearly shows the effectiveness of developing a brand (franchise) through sequels built continuously around a character, which will create interest and love from the audience to such a high level," Mr. Hai analyzed.
According to Meritorious Artist Bui Trung Hai, currently, there are two animation film industries that use this very successful creative method: America and Japan.
"Perhaps Vietnam also needs to start experimenting with animated films developed and produced using this method. Of course, in terms of technique, graphics... Vietnamese animators also need to learn more, in order to improve their works to a more complete level...", Mr. Hai expressed.
