Dr. Dinh Van Luong, Senior Physician, Meritorious Physician, Director of the Central Lung Hospital, said that the spirit of Doctor Pham Ngoc Thach is the red thread with the mindset of "doing it no matter how difficult" throughout the process of formation, development and growth of the Central Lung Hospital today.
On June 24, 1957, the Government signed a Decision to establish the Central Tuberculosis Institute and Dr. Pham Ngoc Thach was the first Minister of Health and also the first Director of the Institute. The decision to establish the Tuberculosis Institute clearly stated that "The Tuberculosis Institute has the task of researching tuberculosis and preventing tuberculosis, helping the Ministry of Health lead the entire industry and the people to gradually reduce the rate and eradicate tuberculosis".
From that day on, Dr. Pham Ngoc Thach stated the viewpoint of the integrated thinking of the profession, which is: "Only by firmly grasping the situation of lung diseases in the country can tuberculosis be diagnosed with fewer mistakes." He also affirmed that research and clinical practice of tuberculosis cannot be separated from lung diseases.
Doctor Pham Ngoc Thach is a scientist of the people, for the people, a talented leader in health management science, public health management, and management of tuberculosis and lung diseases.
The late Minister of Health Pham Ngoc Thach found the way and left for future generations a valuable ideology for the Vietnamese health sector, especially in the fields of tuberculosis and lung diseases.
For lung diseases, Dr. Pham Ngoc Thach's spirit is the guiding principle in conquering lung transplant techniques, one of the most difficult techniques in organ transplantation.

With that spirit, the Central Lung Hospital and the National Tuberculosis Control Program have constantly improved their professional qualifications and spirit of serving patients, and have achieved many successes in implementing advanced techniques in lung diseases and tuberculosis control, especially in the field of lung transplantation, one of the most difficult techniques in organ transplantation.
The spirit of Doctor Pham Ngoc Thach with the determination "No matter how difficult it is, we will do it" was highlighted by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh during his visit and work at the Central Lung Hospital before the Lunar New Year 2025. It has become a "compass" in the mission of eliminating tuberculosis and caring for and improving lung health for the Vietnamese people.
The Central Lung Hospital has continued to perfect the process and transfer lung transplant technology - continuing the miracles in lung transplant, gradually striving to build the hospital into a regional Lung Transplant Center to serve patients in Vietnam and other countries in the region.
After more than 30 years of developing organ transplant techniques, Vietnam has performed more than 9,000 organ transplants, but only 14 of these were lung transplants. In 2024 alone, the Central Lung Hospital successfully performed 3 complete lung transplants for patients from brain-dead donors, with the support of leading domestic experts.
In 2025, two transplants were successfully performed in one week last April with patients and lung organs coordinated from Ho Chi Minh City to the Central Lung Hospital.
With these 2 special transplants, the total number of successful lung transplants at the Central Lung Hospital has increased to 6, the highest standard in the US, making lung transplant a routine technique at the Central Lung Hospital, in which the first case was performed by the hospital 5 years ago with the highest success.
