Overcome difficulties and rise up
At 7 a.m., Mr. Nguyen Xuan Huy (Trung 1 village, Dien Dien commune) sat at the table carving patterns on rough wooden logs. The clacking sound of the chisel has been familiar to the people here for nearly 20 years. With a bright smile, Mr. Huy shared: "Thanks to the wood carving profession, I have the conditions to take care of my family's life and confidently integrate into society." Mr. Huy said that when he was 3 years old, polio took away his healthy legs. As he grew older, his legs kept shrinking and he could not walk, even though he sought treatment everywhere but could not recover. Diligent and diligent in studying, after 3 years, he returned to open a carpentry business at home and received goods for processing. Ms. Ho Thi Bich Thuy raises chickens for stable income, improving her life. |
Crossing the winding road, we visited the family of Mrs. Ho Thi Bich Thuy (Dong 3 village, Dien Dien commune) when she was chopping vegetables and mixing bran for the chickens to eat. With her limping legs supported by crutches, Mrs. Thuy took us to a barn of over 100 square meters with a batch of over 100 chickens about to be sold. "I am disabled and have no job. Thanks to my hard work in raising chickens, each batch I sell earns about 15 million VND. After deducting the cost of breeding and food, I still earn a few million VND to pay for my children's education and living expenses," said Mrs. Thuy. Mrs. Thuy had polio when she was 2 years old, leading to atrophy and disability of her left leg. When she grew up, in order not to become a burden on her family, Mrs. Thuy went to learn sewing, but because there were few customers, she had to put her job aside. When the locality coordinated with a vocational training facility to open a livestock training class, Ms. Thuy registered to study for 3 months and then borrowed capital to invest in a chicken coop to have a stable source of income.

Support for the disabled
For the disabled people we met, hidden in their disabled bodies is the strength of will and determination to rise up quite strongly. Overcoming difficulties, they have risen to take control of their lives, becoming shining examples for many people to follow. That success is partly thanks to the support of all levels, sectors, localities, especially the Association of People with Disabilities in Dien Khanh district. Established in 2013, the Association of People with Disabilities in Dien Khanh district has truly become a solid support for more than 160 people with disabilities in the district.
Representatives of the Association of People with Disabilities of Dien Khanh district visited and encouraged Mr. Nguyen Xuan Huy. |
Showing responsibility for people with disabilities, the Executive Committee of the Association of People with Disabilities in Dien Khanh district has actively and skillfully mobilized and connected with many charitable organizations at home and abroad to implement many projects to support health care, livelihoods, capital, machinery and equipment... for members. In particular, in recent years, the association has coordinated with vocational training institutions to open vocational training classes for members. At the same time, through the annual mobilized budget of 300 million VND to nearly 1 billion VND, the association has supported capital for members to invest, apply knowledge from vocational training to develop the economy , strive to become independent in life, and integrate into the community. The Association of People with Disabilities in Dien Khanh district also regularly organizes cultural and artistic activities, exchanges with people with disabilities in and outside the province. Each member when sick or in trouble is promptly visited and encouraged by the association.
Mr. Dinh Cong Thanh - Chairman of the Association of the Disabled in Dien Khanh district shared: “Each member when participating in activities is supported equally by the association, so gradually the inferiority complex is erased, everyone becomes confident, has a job to create income, and stabilizes life. Not only connecting benefactors to support livelihoods, capital, wheelchairs, wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, etc., the association has also been a bridge to connect marriages for 10 members. The lives of the couples matched by the association are all happy, relying on and helping each other in life, giving birth to healthy children, and the children are well-behaved and study well.”
However, what Mr. Thanh is concerned about is that, currently, some industries such as: Garment, making decorative snails, bamboo chopsticks... are operating ineffectively, due to the weak skills of members, handmade products are not sophisticated and are not favored by customers, leading to many members leaving the profession, some members working half-heartedly. Therefore, the association hopes that all levels and sectors will pay attention to support training to improve skills, invest in machinery and introduce output for products. Along with that, the association hopes that local authorities, organizations and individuals will continue to pay attention to helping the association with funding to operate more effectively...
