Cao Duy Thong - a student of Co Do High School (Nghia Dan district, Nghe An) burst into happiness. This male student shared his joy with his parents and relatives. Cao Duy Thong is a Tho ethnic group, his family currently lives in Cao village, Nghia Mai commune - a commune in a particularly difficult area of Nghia Dan district. His parents are farmers so the economy is still difficult. Before Thong, there were 2 older sisters who were also famous for their excellent studies in the village. More than ten years ago, although they were admitted to the University of Medicine, due to their circumstances, they decided to give up their dream of studying and go to work early. All the hopes of the family were placed on the youngest brother.

Living far from the center in poor learning conditions, Thong was eager to learn and studied very well. During his secondary school years, Cao Duy Thong was an outstanding member of the school, continuously participating in district-level excellent student competitions and achieving high results. In particular, the most outstanding subject was English.

Thong shared: “I learned English quite late when I was in 6th grade. However, this foreign language has a great attraction for me. Because my house is far from the district center, I researched books and documents online to study without going to any center. I think my biggest advantage is having a fairly solid grammar foundation. For the rest, I find documents to study on my own. For listening and speaking, I practice by watching clips online and practicing speaking every day to practice my skills.”

Thanks to his self-study and tireless efforts, in grade 12, Cao Duy Thong won second prize in English at the provincial excellent student competition. He also achieved an excellent IELTS score of 8.0. This is a very rare result in a school in the mountainous region of Nghe An.

With an IELTS certificate of 8.0, Thong was of course exempted from the English exam. However, with the desire to test himself, he still registered for the exam and achieved a perfect score. Even before taking the high school graduation exam, Thong had received a notice of admission to the Diplomatic Academy according to his first choice. However, because he wanted to prove himself and not let down his teachers and family, Thong tried his best and achieved the highest results.

Talking about this student, the homeroom teacher of grade 12 Nguyen Thi Phuong Lan remembers most of all the image of a diligent and humble student. During the 3 years of high school, this student rarely had a full lunch but mainly ate bread and sticky rice in front of the school gate and studied during lunch in class.

Thong is also a special student, knowing how to share with friends, forming groups to help students who are weaker. In Thong, I see a very good ability to self-study. He does not study for exams but studies comfortably to enrich his knowledge.

The news that student Cao Duy Thong is the valedictorian of the province made Mr. Chu Thong Nhat, Principal of Co Do High School, very happy. According to the principal, although Thong was born into a poor family and his learning conditions were not as good as many of his friends in the city, he always tried his best to study well, actively participated in group activities, and passed on his skills and passion to his friends in the school.

Becoming the valedictorian of Nghe An province, Thong sent his thanks to the teachers who accompanied and supported him during his studies. Thong is grateful to his parents and sisters, because the family has always sacrificed for him. “My parents work hard in the fields just to want me to study well. Therefore, I always encourage myself to try my best to get the best results, so that I can find a suitable job to help my family in the future,” Thong shared.

Sharing about his future plans, he said he really likes learning about history and the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and other countries in the world. Therefore, the Diplomatic Academy is the school for this poor student from Nghe An to realize his dream.
