Ms. Bui Thi Duyen from Tan Binh ward, Dong Xoai city, said: “Every summer, I usually send my children to swimming lessons. Currently, drowning accidents occur quite frequently in rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes around the area, so equipping them with swimming skills not only helps them improve their health but also protects their safety when interacting with water environments.”
Not only parents but also children are very excited about learning to swim. Mai Tien Gia Vinh (Ms. Duyen's son) shared: "I want to learn to swim to help my body become healthier and more flexible. At the same time, to be able to protect myself and avoid the risk of drowning when in contact with rivers, lakes, ponds, and streams."
At Dai Duong Phat swimming pool in Tan Phu ward, Dong Xoai city, the number of children registering for swimming lessons this summer has increased significantly compared to previous years. Mr. Nguyen Chi Thuyen, the pool manager, said that parents are increasingly interested in teaching their children to swim. “Many families from far away, such as Dong Phu district, and even Dak Nong province, bring their children here to learn to swim. In particular, some families bring 4-5 children or grandchildren to learn until they become proficient,” Mr. Thuyen said.
In addition to teaching basic swimming skills, the instructors here also focus on teaching drowning prevention skills. Children are guided on how to float when falling into deep water, how to swim safely to shore, helping them avoid panic and handle dangerous situations.
In addition, the Provincial Youth Activities Center also organizes free monthly and quarterly swimming lessons for disadvantaged children, aiming to provide all children with the opportunity to access this important life skill. Mr. Nguyen Tai Tue, Head of the Provincial Youth Swimming Club, said: “At school, children are often educated about drowning prevention through theory, but the most important thing is that they practice in a swimming pool. When learning to swim, besides learning basic swimming techniques, teachers also teach situational handling skills, such as how to float when falling into deep water and how to swim at least 50 meters to ensure safety.”

According to statistics, every year across the country, drowning accidents claim the lives of thousands of children, mostly due to a lack of swimming skills and awareness of prevention. These accidents can occur in rivers, streams, ponds, lakes, swimming pools, or even during everyday activities if children are not closely supervised and lack self-protection skills. Therefore, in addition to intensified awareness campaigns from relevant authorities, families need to raise their awareness, pay attention to their children, and proactively encourage them to learn to swim.
Summer is a time for children to play and develop physically and mentally; however, it is also a time when many drowning accidents are likely to occur if proper preparation and prevention measures are not taken. Equipping children with swimming skills and the ability to handle situations in the water not only helps them protect themselves but also contributes to minimizing tragic accidents. To ensure each summer is safe, healthy, and meaningful, relevant authorities, schools, families, and the children themselves need to work together to effectively implement drowning prevention measures.
