Safety "shield" for children

BPO - Summer is the time when children have more time to rest and play, but it is also the time when the risk of drowning increases, becoming a major concern for many families. Faced with this situation, authorities, sectors and localities in Binh Phuoc province have proactively implemented many solutions to reduce drowning accidents, especially increasing propaganda and organizing swimming classes to equip children with survival skills.

Ms. Bui Thi Duyen in Tan Binh Ward, Dong Xoai City said: “Every summer, I often take my children to swimming lessons. Currently, drowning accidents occur quite often in rivers, streams, and lakes around the area, so equipping children with swimming skills not only helps them improve their health but also protects them when they come into contact with water.”

Not only parents but also children are eager to learn to swim. Mai Tien Gia Vinh (Duyen's son) shared: "I want to learn to swim to help my body become healthier and more flexible. At the same time, to be able to protect myself, to prevent the risk of drowning when in contact with rivers, lakes, ponds, and streams."

At Dai Duong Phat swimming pool, Tan Phu ward, Dong Xoai city, the number of children registering for swimming lessons this summer has increased significantly compared to previous years. Mr. Nguyen Chi Thuyen, swimming pool manager, said that parents are increasingly interested in teaching their children to swim. "Many families from far away like Dong Phu district, even Dak Nong province, also bring their children here to learn to swim. In particular, there are families who bring 4-5 children and grandchildren to learn until they are proficient before returning home," said Mr. Thuyen.

In addition to teaching basic swimming skills, the coaches here also focus on imparting drowning prevention skills. Children are instructed on how to float when falling into deep water, how to swim safely to shore, helping them not to panic and handle dangerous situations.

In addition, the Provincial Youth Activity Center also organizes free monthly and quarterly swimming classes for disadvantaged children, in order to create conditions for all children to have the opportunity to access this important life skill. Mr. Nguyen Tai Tue, Head of the Provincial Youth Swimming Club, said: “At school, children are often educated about drowning prevention through theory, but the most important thing is that they must practice in the swimming pool. When learning to swim, in addition to knowing basic swimming skills, teachers also teach skills to handle situations, such as how to float when falling into deep water and swim at least 50m to ensure safety.”

According to statistics, every year, drowning accidents take the lives of thousands of children nationwide, most of which are due to lack of swimming skills and awareness of prevention. These accidents can occur in rivers, lakes, swimming pools or even in daily activities if children are not closely supervised and do not have self-protection skills. Therefore, in addition to promoting propaganda from functional sectors, families need to raise awareness, care and proactively let their children learn to swim.

Summer is a time for children to have fun, develop physically and mentally, but it is also a time with many potential risks of drowning accidents if there is no careful preparation and prevention. Equipping children with swimming skills and handling situations in water not only helps them protect themselves but also contributes to reducing unfortunate and tragic accidents. For each summer to be safe, healthy and meaningful, authorities, schools, families and children themselves need to work together to effectively implement measures to prevent and combat drowning.
