We met Ms. Tao Thi Son (born in 1991), Lu ethnic group in Dong Pao 1 village at Norcem Yen Binh Cement Factory, Ban Hon commune, Tam Duong district, Lai Chau province. Ms. Son said that since giving birth, her child is almost 2 years old, both mother and child are in good health, so she left her child at home with her grandparents to go to work, increasing the family income.

Ms. Tao Thi Son said that since she was pregnant, she has been cared for and advised on regular health care by the aunts and uncles at the Medical Center. She went for pregnancy check-ups as instructed by the doctor and underwent prenatal screening and congenital disease screening. She herself was also given nutritional advice during pregnancy and received nutritional support before, during and after giving birth. Because her family is near-poor, when her child was born, she and her child received monthly cash support of 500,000 VND.

In Lai Chau, the Lu ethnic group, along with three other ethnic groups: Cong, Mang, and Si La, are ethnic groups with very few people and are also on the list of 14 ethnic groups with specific difficulties according to Decision No. 1227/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister. In addition to enjoying policies from population work in the province, the Lu ethnic group also enjoys policies from a number of projects of the National Target Program on Socio -Economic Development for Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2030 period (National Target Program 1719).

Periodically assessing population work in the first months of 2024, Dr. Hoang Hai Hung, Head of the Department of Population and Family Planning of Lai Chau province, said: In 8 districts and 106 communes of the province, 57 communication sessions on the benefits of prenatal and newborn screening were organized; 139 communication sessions on the harmful effects of early marriage, consanguineous marriage and improving population quality; 23 communication sessions on reducing the incidence of thalassemia; 46 conferences and talks on counseling and pre-marital health check-ups were organized, attracting 8,957 listeners. In particular, prenatal screening by ultrasound was performed for 394 pregnant women; blood was taken for screening tests for 27 pregnant mothers; newborn screening was performed for 42 children. For the elderly, who are ethnic minorities, there are health care programs adapted to population aging. Currently, we have organized regular health check-ups and issued health insurance cards for the elderly.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Thuan, Deputy Head of the Ethnic Minorities Committee of Lai Chau province affirmed: Lai Chau province focuses on effectively implementing Project 7 in the National Target Program 1719 on people's health care, improving the physical condition and stature of ethnic minorities; preventing and combating child malnutrition. In addition, Project 9 (Investing in the development of ethnic minority groups with very few people and ethnic groups with many difficulties) also has content supporting the improvement of population quality. Specifically, content No. 4 of Sub-Project 1 has supported the protection and development of ethnic minorities with specific difficulties. Implementing Project 9, by the end of the first quarter of 2024, Lai Chau province has organized 234 nutrition consultations for pregnant women, providing nutritional support for 127 pregnant mothers. At the same time, supporting the screening and diagnosis of some common congenital diseases for 81 pregnant mothers...
