Lam Binh - Tuyen Quang: Increasing the value of OCOP products helps people escape poverty

Identifying the fastest way to help people, especially ethnic minorities in the highlands, escape poverty is not to build them a decent house or provide them with money, but to fundamentally solve the need for jobs and create sustainable livelihoods. Through the One Commune One Product (OCOP) Program, over the years, Lam Binh District, Tuyen Quang Province has continuously supported collectives and individuals to improve product quality, introduce, promote and expand the market for OCOP products for people to reach consumers in the fastest and most effective way. Arousing local strengths In recent years, Lam Binh District, Tuyen Quang Province has directed communes and towns to focus on shifting crop structure towards improving quality and efficiency, associated with commodity-oriented production, focusing on widely implementing the One Commune One Product (OCOP) Program. To do this, Lam Binh encourages the development of production organization forms, improving management capacity for enterprises, cooperatives, and households producing agricultural , non-agricultural and service products according to the value chain, in order to promote creativity and internal strength to increase income and improve people's lives. The goal by 2025, Lam Binh district will have 5-star OCOP products, standardize and upgrade 5 products classified in 2020 from 3 stars to 4 stars.

It is known that Lam Binh district currently has 25 OCOP products recognized at the provincial level, of which 4 products are 4-star quality, 21 products are 3-star quality, including products such as: Yeast wine, Khau Mut tea, catfish, goat meat... in which goat meat products are a new direction to develop household economy and promote hunger eradication and poverty reduction in many localities in the district. With high mountainous terrain, rich vegetation, and many types of plants that are suitable food for goats to grow, the Lam Binh mountain goat brand quickly became known to many people. In order to turn mountain goat products into key agricultural products, in 2022, Lam Binh cooperated with the Agricultural Extension Center of Tuyen Quang province to improve the local mountain goat herd to produce high productivity and quality. Initially, the model of breeding goats in the district has brought economic efficiency, received the support and participation of the people in raising, expanding the goat herd, and goat-raising households. Mr. Quang Minh Toan, Binh An commune, said: The family initially had 2 pairs of parent goats, now there are 12 pairs, the goats are raised in a semi-natural combination, so disease control for the goats is guaranteed, the reproduction of the goats is also well controlled so the rate of stillborn goats is almost zero. Raising goats is not as hard as raising buffaloes and cows but it is highly economically efficient, the price of goat meat is about 150,000 VND/kg, thanks to raising goats, my family has an income of about 100 million VND/year. Increase OCOP products to reduce the rate of poor households According to the plan, in 2023, Lam Binh district will have 6 new products participating in the evaluation and classification of OCOP with 3 stars or more. Currently, localities with products participating in the evaluation and classification are focusing on completing procedures, promoting, introducing and improving product quality. Typically, Phuc Yen black pork sour meat is one of 6 products of the district participating in the evaluation and classification of OCOP products at the end of 2023. To ensure the prescribed standards, in addition to carrying out procedures to complete the evaluation and classification records, Phuc Yen commune also focuses on propaganda, mobilization and preferential resources to support families in the interest group to maintain and expand the breeding of local black pigs, contributing to ensuring sufficient supply for processing sour meat.

The number of goat herds and goat farming households will increase, then the problem of creating local jobs for ethnic minorities will be solved.

In addition to the 6 products participating in the new evaluation and classification, Lam Binh district also has 11 products that were evaluated and classified in the second phase of 2020 that will also participate in the re-evaluation and classification. In order to improve the quality of OCOP products, the district always pays attention to, creates conditions, and guides OCOP product owners to develop plans and organize production and business development to ensure efficiency, expand production linkages along the value chain, improve the quality of output products, improve labels, designs, and packaging. Support funding for building booths to promote and introduce key products, specialties, and OCOP products at fairs and conferences, in order to widely introduce products to consumers. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Trung, Secretary of the District Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Lam Binh District, said that the OCOP Program has contributed to transforming production towards increasing scale associated with the value chain, thus improving product quality, being accepted by the market, creating stable income for local people. Regarding Lam Binh goat meat products, in the coming time, we will continue to propagate and mobilize people to increase their herds, take care of them according to the correct process, and at the same time cooperate with distributors to make Lam Binh goat meat products a brand of Tuyen Quang province.
