La Gan Cape fishing village

It's unclear when exactly La Gàn became a strip of land jutting out into the sea, but people from many places came to settle and make a living there. Most were fishermen, following in their fathers' footsteps, buying boats and baskets to go out to sea daily to catch fish and shrimp; a few families also cleared land at the headland to cultivate crops.

That strip of land forms a gentle arc stretching over 2,000 meters along the coastline, with some areas of flat white sand, others of colorful pebbles, but also some rugged stretches of large rocks.
In the early morning, the sea is a clear blue, and the white-crested waves constantly crash against the shore, making the rocks and pebbles even more polished and vibrant in color.

On the sea, hundreds of boats and fishing vessels are anchored to shelter from the wind, allowing fishermen to wash their nets after returning from their fishing trips. On the land reclaimed from the sea, the residents of La Gàn fishing village are bustling with their daily lives. Lush orchards stretch along the headland, and further in the distance, vast, verdant casuarina forests sway in the wind. On the beach, tourists swim and explore the colorful pebble beach. The gentle sound of the waves, the lively laughter and conversations... all blend together like a vibrant and colorful natural painting.
Life in the La Gàn fishing village (Bình Thạnh commune – Tuy Phong district) has changed significantly today. With economic and cultural development, the locality has exploited its strengths and beautiful natural scenery to develop tourism. However, in the memories of many older fishermen, the old La Gàn cape still holds many unforgettable memories and nostalgia. These include the revolutionary traditions during the two wars of resistance against France and the United States, where the people of the fishing village were resilient and endured many sacrifices and losses. The most memorable historical event was on the 15th day of the first lunar month of the year Tân Mão (1951), when the French unexpectedly landed a regiment in Cát Bay village. The French soldiers brutally murdered people and burned houses. The Cát Bay massacre took place while most villagers were having breakfast and preparing to go to work. Because of their refusal to cooperate with the enemy, they burned, killed, and destroyed everything. In this massacre, the enemy killed 178 people and wounded more than 50; every house had dead or injured people; they burned more than 200 houses and killed hundreds of people's buffaloes and cows.

With that unwavering spirit, after the liberation of South Vietnam in 1975, the people of La Gàn were awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the State.
Mr. Le Hoang Quan, an elderly fisherman from La Gan fishing village, shared: “During the war years, the people here suffered greatly. After the country was unified, La Gan fishing village developed many new occupations. In families, the husband goes to sea, while the wife stays at home doing small-scale trading, providing services, and growing fruit trees… When tourism developed, the La Gan cape became well-known because nature has bestowed upon this place many beautiful landscapes and historical and cultural relics that have been upgraded, such as the Seven-Colored Rock Beach, Ca Duoc Beach, the desert hill, and the mossy green rock beach; alongside these are the Co Thach Pagoda, Binh An Temple, and the Nam Hai Mausoleum. In addition, on the La Gan cape, there are two ancient wells located along the coast, which are truly miraculous. The wells are situated right on the rocky beach near the sea, with clear, cool freshwater year-round.”
The once desolate La Gan Cape has now become a bustling, vibrant rural area…

In recent years, low tide days (the beginning and middle of the month) have been ideal times for tourists to visit the Ca Duoc rocky beaches and mossy green rock beaches along the coast for recreation and sightseeing. Many people stay overnight to watch the sunrise or experience pulling nets with local fishermen. The villagers not only engage in farming and fishing but also offer various services to cater to the needs of tourists visiting the beautiful Bình Thạnh coastal area.
