Letting go of the iron fish to catch the perch is the trick that the subjects in the fraud ring used to sell their goods.
The trick of selling fake and low-quality counterfeit goods disguised as seminars, product introductions with promotional gifts to entice people to buy is not a new trick, but many people in localities still become victims.
These subjects often target the elderly and gullible women to scam and sell poor quality products.
Recently, a group of scammers using a sophisticated tactic - holding seminars to sell products and give away gifts as a token of gratitude... was dismantled by the police of Duy Tien town, Ha Nam province, arresting 15 subjects. Initially, the group's methods have been clarified.
All of the seized goods were smuggled, poor quality, and of unknown manufacturing origin.
Although they had never purchased any products and did not know the company's origin, many middle-aged women in Duy Tien town, Ha Nam province, were suddenly given invitations to a restaurant to attend a party called "Customer Appreciation".
Ms. Vu Thi Hoa, a victim of fraud, said: "First, they gave away the bowl without taking any money. Second, the price was stainless steel, and third, they also did not take any money for the plate."
The group even gave away other products advertised as more valuable, such as blenders, frying pans, etc., to some people at the conference, with the condition that they had to deposit between 50,000 and 100,000 VND. True to the name of the "gratitude party", everyone who received the gifts had their money refunded. However, according to the investigation agency, this was actually a scam set up by the subjects.
Letting go of the iron fish to catch the perch is the trick that the subjects in the scam group used to sell goods. At first, the subjects only gave away worthless items. After people trusted them and spent millions of dong to order the products, some of the subjects who collected the money in the group ran away.
Currently, the police have detained 15 related subjects.
The entire process of organizing the conference was under surveillance. Waiting for the moment when the group of people collecting money escaped to a 16-seat car waiting outside, the police swooped in and arrested them. A man identified as the ringleader of the gratitude party reacted strongly when the task force arrived to inspect.
The subjects listed a rice cooker advertised as having the function of separating sugar and reducing fat for 4.6 million VND. The blender was priced at 3.1 million VND. However, according to the import invoice provided by this group, each product only cost a few hundred thousand VND. All of the seized goods were floating goods, poor quality, and unknown manufacturing units.
According to investigation documents, in just one afternoon of selling, the group collected more than 800 million VND from seminar participants.
"The subjects discussed and agreed with each other very carefully, choosing subjects to scam, preying on people's greed, thinking that coming will give them money and products, so people need to be extremely vigilant and cautious," Lieutenant Colonel Bui Quang Phuc, Captain of the Drug Economic Crime Investigation Police Team, Duy Tien Town Police, Ha Nam, informed.
Currently, the police have temporarily detained 15 related subjects. Most of them are young, healthy men who joined the sales gang to do light work with high salaries.
As for the victims who attended the gratitude party, after what happened, now they can only blame themselves.
